Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy joins The Avengers and Spider-Man: Miles Morales in the list of Marvel superhero movies made into games by Square Enix.
Star-Lord a.k.a Peter Quill serves as the so-called leader of this group of intergalactic misfits in a brand new planet-hopping adventure. Guardians of the Galaxy pulls inspiration from the series and spins it into its own story instead of copying the canon. The characters still emanate the same essence as their comic book counterparts, but the developers took liberty with designing storylines and mechanics that adapt into a video game.
Despite Square Enix’s earlier flop with Marvel’s Avengers, the trailers and previews alone have reignited hope in Marvel games.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy editions
Guardians of the Galaxy offers standard and deluxe editions. Standard editions only come with the base game plus a pre-order bonus if you order early. The cosmic deluxe edition includes Star Lord’s Sun-Lord, City-Lord, and Social Lord-outfits, and digital download codes for the game’s soundtrack and mini artbook.
Keep in mind that physical and digital deluxe versions slightly differ. The cosmic deluxe physical edition includes a SteelBook case and a paper copy of the artbook instead of a download code.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gameplay
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a single-player, third-person action-adventure game. Think of it as a spinoff to the movie, except it’s a game. You play as Star-Lord, and only Star-Lord. However, he can command his allies in combat, which maybe counts as controlling them even if indirectly. Star-Lord and the Guardians must save the galaxy from an unknown demise that hasn’t been outlined yet in the trailers and promotional material.
The gameplay previews show combat with typical features like dodging, dashing, and weapons to switch between. Players also have the ability to respond to allies via music cues (albeit with licensed tracks that have to be censored for streamers). These tie in with Star-Lord’s love for music, which fans of the series should know from his frequently mentioned Walkman. The soundtrack, which characterizes the game, includes ‘80s real-life hits and original tracks combined.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy DLC
One of the biggest complaints about Marvel’s Avengers is the aggravating amount of DLC and microtransactions. Many felt that they needed to pay extra to fully experience the game. However, developers for Guardians of the Galaxy told consumers upfront that this game doesn’t have DLC or microtransactions. It should only be a one-time buy, meaning you get a full experience with the base game and don’t need to pay extra for additional content. In fact, additional content won’t be available.
Guardians of the Galaxy was apparently in development before Avengers, which makes it interesting that they didn’t include DLC and microtransactions. It almost seems like a direct response to the backlash for Avengers, even though the decision may have been made much earlier.
