Well now look at what the cat dragged in—1666: Amsterdam is still happening. During today’s Summer Game Fest livestream, Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets took to the stage to reveal the debut trailer for his long-awaited adventure game starring a witchy lady I can’t help but root for.

The dark, third-person action game launches in early access this year, but you can play a short 30-minute demo now on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. It’s not very often I get a game about the kind of broody, intimidating cat lady I aspire to be, so of course I’m mid-download as I write this.

It serves as a standalone narrative teaser, introducing us to the world and leading lady, the witch Noa Brooklyn. We saw some of that in the SGF reveal trailer, which also included plenty of ominous black cats, dark cuts to Noa in witch garb, and very brief clips of her swinging a staff around. No shots of anyone trying to toss her on a pyre. I’m assuming they all know better than to try.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of 1666: Amsterdam, but it’s taken a lot to get it to the SGF stage. The game originally started as a project Désilets worked on while at THQ Montreal, which was later bought out by Ubisoft in 2013. He was fired shortly after, and then sued Ubisoft for the rights to 1666. That’s obviously all worked out now, and Désilets was finally able to share those results today.

Everything in the trailer looks cool as hell, though I’m hoping Noa’s intimidating presence hits in all the same ways when there’s actual gameplay involved. As for how that shapes up, the team at Panache Digital says your journey as Noa will take place across multiple timelines. The first unfolds in 1666, then it moves into 1999, and then the present day. You’ll piece together the world’s mysteries across timelines and eventually reveal “fragments of a larger truth.”

No word on an exact date just yet, but you’ll be able to play 1666: Amsterdam in early access sometime this year.
