AMD RX 6800 and 6800 XT: limited pre-orders have begun

The RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT are now officially available for pre-order. Our RX 6800 and 6800 XT review shows that AMD’s promise of high-end performance has been achieved, so expect a lot of demand for the new cards. In this article, we’ll share the best places in the US and UK to pick up your new RX 6800 series card now that we’ve reached the 2PM GMT / 9AM ET November 18th release date.

So why is this card so hotly anticipated? Put simply, it’s the first card in a long time that actually threatens to challenge Nvidia’s dominant position in the graphics card market, the first cards that will actually go toe-to-toe with Nvidia’s high-end cards. If you’re building a mid-range to high-end rig, these are great choices with a reasonable degree of future-proofing, thanks to HDMI 2.1 support, 16GB of VRAM and RT capabilities too. There are also some neat features, like Smart Access Memory and Rage Mode which could boost performance further.

All that is to say that this card is expected to go fast, so here’s what you need to know – and the web pages you should probably bookmark!

Update, 3PM 18/11: We’ve now updated links to pretty much all the retailers listed, but there has been extremely few cards available at launch so far. We’ll add more links and tweet deals at @dealsfoundry, so please stay tuned.

Where can you buy the RX 6800 and 6800 XT in the US?

The RX 6800 and 6800 XT should theoretically be available from a wide range of major stores, which we’ve summarised in a handy table below. Stock is expected to sell out quickly, so do consider checking a second or even third retailer if you aren’t able to order from your normal go-to!

How fast are the RX 6800 and 6800 XT?

The RX 6800 is normally around 15 per cent faster than the 3070, outside of RT titles, while the RX 6800 XT is normally within five per cent of the more expensive RTX 3080. That’s without taking into account technologies like Smart Access Memory and Rage Mode that could boost performance further. However, RT performance isn’t great, with these cards often 30 per cent or more slower than their nearest Nvidia competitors, and there’s no DLSS feature to close the gap.

Overall though, the RX 6800 series’ competitive price to performance in traditional rasterised games suggests that these AMD GPUs is likely to join our round-up of the best graphics cards as soon as we have a chance to update it!

What are the RX 6800 and 6800 XT prices?

AMD’s recommended retail price is $580 for the RX 6800 and $650 for the RX 6800 XT, slotting the two cards in between the RTX 3070 ($500) and RTX 3080 ($700). Some UK retailers are selling for the RX 6800 for around £600, and the RX 6800 XT for around £620. We’re waiting to see official UK and EU prices, and will update this article accordingly…

When will the RX 6800 and 6800 XT come back into stock?

We asked AMD UK this question and they shared this statement with us:

“We are thrilled with the reception to the AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series based on the strong demand. We are producing a significant number of GPUs and working closely with our graphics card partners to ramp production and bring custom AMD Radeon 6000 series cards to market over the coming weeks. We are grateful for your support and patience as we get AMD Radeon 6000 cards into the hands of as many gamers as possible.”

So… unclear but they’re aware of the issues and hopefully we’ll see more stock soon.

There are a range of UK and US retailers with RX 6800 and 6800 XT graphics cards available who will build an desktop PC for you. You do pay a premium for the privilege – and your computer won’t arrive as early – but this is still a great option for anyone without the time or inclination to build for themselves. We’re still waiting on many retailers to confirm they will be using RX 6800 hardware, but here are some good places to start.
