The Pokémon Company released its new app, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, under a week ago, but it’s already earned quite a bit of cash. The digital trading card game for mobile devices has made more than $12 million since its release on Oct. 30, as reported by the analytics platform Appmagic.
Pokémon TCG Pocket is a free-to-play game for mobile devices where players build a collection of digitized Pokémon cards. The game allows players to open virtual versions of booster packs and battle with the cards. Each collector may open up to two packs of cards for free each day, but the game has various in-game purchases that allow players to open additional packs and unlock cosmetic items to show off their collections. The game’s battle pass costs $9.99 per month and allows users to earn special rewards and open an additional pack of cards daily.
On Sunday, the official social media account celebrated more than 10 million downloads worldwide. That’s nothing to scoff at, but Pokémon games tend to set a high bar for themselves. For context, Niantic’s Pokémon Go app generated $143 million in profit for the 2016 fiscal year, and a single physical Pokémon card can sell for more than $900 thousand at auction. So we’ll have to wait and see if TCG Pocket will be able to reach those heights.
