We already knew that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will premiere in theaters on April 8, 2022. What we didn’t know (at least officially) was that the follow-up will feature Sonic’s long-time sidekick, Tails. Paramount Pictures unveiled the film’s official logo today with a short teaser video confirming the two-tailed fox’s presence.

In a nice touch, the video also includes a brief sample of Sonic 2’s Emerald Hills music to really set the tone for the sequel. Other than Tails’ involvement (which was hinted in the first film) we still don’t know what the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be or which characters from the first movie will return, though you imagine Jim Carrey will be a lock. We do know that director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are returning for the sequel, as is Ben Schwartz as Sonic.
I obviously can’t speak for everyone, but I enjoyed the first film much more than I expected to. Sure, It’s goofy and outright dumb in parts, but it’s also a lot of fun and packs quite a bit of heart. I’ll always remember it as the last film I saw in theaters before the pandemic hit. Who knows, maybe by next April, it’ll be the first movie I see in theaters again. Also of note: April 8, 2022, is a Friday and not a Tuesday. Big missed opportunity there.
