Ghost of Tsushima anime coming from Crunchyroll and PlayStation

An original anime series based on PlayStation franchise Ghost of Tsushima is coming from Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, the companies announced Monday at Sony’s CES 2025 press conference. The anime series, set to debut in 2027, will be based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the cooperative multiplayer mode released for the original Ghost of Tsushima in 2020.

The series will be helmed by director Takanobu Mizuno, whose previous work includes Star Wars: Visions and Batman Ninja. Story composition is by Gen Urobuchi (Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass) and animation will be handled by studio Kamikaze Douga.

Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, said in a news release that the Ghost of Tsushima anime “will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking.”

Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project,” added Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, “and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends lets players choose from four classes (Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin) and take part in two-player story missions, four-player survival missions, and a raid. Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch Productions released the Legends mode as a free update to the game in October 2020, and later released Legends as a stand-alone multiplayer game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

In addition to PlayStation Productions’ anime series, Sony Pictures is developing a movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. John Wick film series director Chad Stahelski is attached to direct the project. PlayStation Productions is the production arm of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and responsible for bringing Uncharted, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, and Twisted Metal to live action. Ghost of Tsushima will be PlayStation Productions’ first anime adaptation.

Sucker Punch is currently working on a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima called Ghost of Yotei. The follow-up is planned to launch sometime in 2025 on PS5.
