Even after Ubisoft confirmed ‘gaming’s worst-kept secret’ of an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake, it somehow manages to leak another trailer before the reveal

Sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches and, credit where it’s due, Ubisoft eventually leaned into the fact that its Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake became, in the publisher’s own words, “the worst-kept secret in gaming.”

The remake’s existence was revealed ahead of time by countless leaks: everything from age rating boards to anonymous sources to its own lead actor, Matt Ryan—who then said he wouldn’t be saying any more because “the company threatened to sue me.” It got leaked by the existence of a statue. Twice.

Finally wiser heads prevailed and Ubisoft began meme-ing about the game, and yesterday officially confirmed that the game will be revealed later this week. But wait! There’s still time for the leakiest game ever to offer up one more leak for old times’ sake, with a clip from what is presumably the reveal trailer finding its way onto X.

The clip gives our first look at in-game footage, with protagonist Edward Kenway alongside Blackbeard during some naval warfare, with lots of explosions and rousing battle cries. It’s only a short snippet but there’s time enough to see Kenway wielding cutlasses, Blackbeard jollying around with a telescope, cannons being loaded, and Kenway taking the ship’s wheel.

It also features Matt Ryan delivering the line “so let the Black Flag signal nothing but your allegiance to man’s natural freedoms”, so it’s nice to know that Ubisoft definitely did call off the lawyers.

Some fans have already stitched together comparison shots, which show the remake does have much more detailed character models and improved lighting. Though if we’re being honest this was always a great-looking game: it’s a glow-up, sure, but I don’t know how many folks who own the original will be rushing to throw their money at Ubisoft.

The official reveal of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will be during a showcase on Thursday, April 23 which takes place at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT. Hopefully the hull of Kenway’s boat proves less leaky than the project itself.
