Post apocalyptic action game Death Stranding amassed 19 million players since its release five years ago, its creator Hideo Kojima said. On Friday, the fifth anniversary of Death Stranding’s original PlayStation 4 release, Kojima released a video on social media platform X celebrating the anniversary and thanking all the 19 million “porters” who had entered his vision of a post-apocalyptic America.

“It has been [five] years since release, and [three] years since [Death Stranding: Director’s Cut], I believe,” Kojima stated in a video while standing next to a life-like sculpture of Sam Porter Bridges, the protagonist of Death Stranding. “You all have continued to play for such a long time, and I am very thankful for that.”

In addition, Kojima also mentioned the ongoing progress on the development of the game’s upcoming sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which as of this writing is slated to launch sometime in 2025. “We are working on Death Stranding 2 right now,” Kojima said. “As I’ve mentioned on my social media, right now is the most critical phase where we are building the game. I have a great feeling about it right now, and I am confident it will be a good piece of work.”

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, was shadow-dropped onto Xbox Series X earlier this week on Thursday, alongside a new cloud-streaming version for Amazon’s Luna platform. As reported in an article from Japanese outlet Automaton on Thursday, Kojima Productions now owns the intellectual property to the franchise, which will continue with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach in 2025. A movie adaptation of Death Stranding, co-produced by Kojima Productions and film studio A24, is also currently in production.

2025 is set to be a big year for Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions, culminating in the eventual release of Death Stranding 2 alongside the studio’s ongoing work on the horror game OD with Xbox Game Studios and the action-espionage game Physint with Sony.
