Wizards of the Coast and Stern Pinball revealed Dungeons & Dragon: The Tyrant’s Eye on Friday, a new pinball table that captures the magic of D&D in mechanical form. The Tyrant’s Eye features both an actual dungeon and an animatronic dragon as part of its design, as well as Dungeons & Dragons’ gameplay mechanics, with a story-based campaign, 45 classic monsters to battle, and iconic character classes.
The marquee feature of Dungeons & Dragon: The Tyrant’s Eye is the table’s big bad guy, Rath the Relentless, a red dragon voiced by Michael Dorn (Star Trek: The Next Generation). Stern calls Rath “the most advanced animatronic mech in pinball,” and he’ll track players’ action as they try to steal his treasure. Rath can also strategically block pathways, avoid being hit, and even breathe pinballs, firing multiple balls from its mouth.
Dungeons & Dragon: The Tyrant’s Eye voice cast also includes Critical Role mainstays Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Marisha Ray; multihyphenate musicians Brendon Small of Dethklok and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance; game designer Luke Gygax; and filmmakers Kevin Smith and Chris Prynoski. Music for The Tyrant’s Eye is by composer Chris Velasco (Bloodborne, Mass Effect 2) and artwork was handled by Vincent Proce. Veteran pinball designer Brian Eddy (Attack From Mars, Medieval Madness) lead the table’s design.
As for the pinball table’s campaign, Stern says that players are “chosen members of the Dragonshield Guild, trying to defeat the dragon queen Tiamat, who is hatching a plan to rise again, triggering the War of Dragons, with Xanathar, Balinor and Sammaster all fighting for power.” Completing the campaign unlocks additional playable characters.
The elaborate production of Dungeons & Dragon: The Tyrant’s Eye comes at a cost. The table’s Pro edition runs $6,999, while a Premium version costs $9,699. For D&D and pinball fans with an infinite bag of holding, the game’s Limited Edition, which is limited to 740 units, costs a whopping $12,999.
