For this writer’s money, the best cult DC Comics hit of the ’00s was Secret Six, a series about a team of superhumans whose rap sheets were too long to ever hang with real superheroes, but who were too annoyingly principled about little things like “human trafficking” or “murdering children” to ever hang with the real supervillains.
The Secret Six will return in 2025, Polygon can reveal courtesy of DC Comics, in a new form with even more potential for hero-vs.-villain morality. Because the new team is comprised of three villains and three superheroes.
The new six-issue Secret Six miniseries will star three classic team members: Catman, Deadshot, and Black Alice — and three troubled young superheroes: Superman (Jon Kent), Gossamer (his boyfriend, Jay Nakamura), and Dreamer. The series is from the pens of writer and actress Nicole Maines (Suicide Squad: Dream Team), who also played Dreamer in the Supergirl TV series, and artist Stephen Segovia (X-Force).
“Getting to be part of DC All In and to continue telling a new story involving Jon Kent, Jay Nakamura, and Dreamer means the world to me,” Maines told Polygon via email. “They’re all at a crossroads right now, at the start of their potential villain origin stories; so having them team up with these Secret Six veterans, all former villains themselves, feels like a mirror into their futures.”
What brings these very different characters together? A hunt for one missing person who has a history of threatening anyone with superpowers, hero and villain alike: Amanda Waller.
“Mixing heroes and villains on the same team is always fun,” Segovia told Polygon via email, “and I’m looking forward to showing fans the different personalities of the character’s Nicole’s writing.”
