On Monday, Joseph Bennett, the co-creator of the animated sci-fi drama Scavengers Reign, posted an update regarding the series’ status on Instagram. Bad news first: Netflix has passed on the opportunity to greenlight a second season of the Emmy-nominated series. In spite of this setback, the creative team behind the show is still passionate about creating a followup to the series, so much so that they’ve produced a spec trailer for what a second season of Scavengers Reign might look like.
“As of right now, Scavengers Reign is not being renewed for a second season,” Bennett wrote in his post. “I wanted to let everyone know directly because I really love our fanbase, they’ve been such champions for the show, and I don’t want to leave everyone hanging.”
The concept trailer is, unsurprisingly, gorgeous. In the trailer, which presumably takes place some time after the conclusion of the first season, we see glimpses of Azi harvesting an alien-like creature from a stalactite in a massive cavern; an ornate spacecraft decorated with golden skulls landing on the surface of Vesta; the survivors of the crash-landed Demeter ship manipulating the planet’s local wildlife to transport cargo and supplies; and Ursula calmly stepping into a strange plant-like pod that envelops her. We even catch a glimpse of everyone’s favorite bio-mechanical robot Levi reaching out to a strange flying creature!
It’s not much to go on, but it’s nonetheless reassuring that Bennett, co-creator Charles Huettner, and the animation team at Green Street Pictures have a firm idea of where they want to go with the series. That is, if and when a second season of Scavengers Reign is ever produced.
“This is not the end. There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season,” said Bennett after thanking everyone who worked on the series.
