How to change your appearance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

You can change your appearance (for free) in Dragon Age: The Veilguard as often as you like. During character creation, the game says you can change your appearance later, but it doesn’t tell you when or where.

Our Dragon Age: The Veilguard guide to changing your appearance will tell you where to go to get a new look.

Where to change your appearance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The only progress you need to make before you can change your appearance is that you have to reach the Lighthouse. You’ll get there at the end of “The End of the Beginning,” Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s very first quest — basically the prologue.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Mirror of Transformation

In the infirmary where you wake up, you’ll see Varric laying on a bed nearby and he’ll stay there for quite a while. In the southwest corner of the room, you’ll find the Mirror of Transformation — basically, Varric is to your left and the mirror is to your right. There’s even an icon for it on your map (which makes us missing it for so long all the more embarrassing).

Interacting with the mirror will take you back to part of the character creator.

What parts of your appearance can you change in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

You cannot change your lineage, class, or faction and backstory, but you’ll get all of the other physical appearance options and sliders again. That means you can can change the following:

  • Head (shape, complexion, and more)
  • Body (shape, proportions, and undergarments)
  • Eyes (shape, color, and eyebrows)
  • Nose (shape)
  • Mouth (shape and position)
  • Ears (shape and position)
  • Hair (style and color)
  • Makeup (eye and lip makeup, and blush)
  • Body art (tattoos, scars, and paint)

You can also select presets of various looks for your Rook.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard choosing gender identity options

You can also change your name and your character’s voice, but (frustratingly) you can’t change your gender identity or pronouns. That said, during “The Enemy of my Enemy” just a little later, you’ll get the opportunity to choose an option that cements your character as trans or non-binary and unlocks a new line of dialogue options throughout the rest of the game.
