In a reveal with Wired [1], PS5 Lead Architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PlayStation 5 would have Backwards Compatibility with all PlayStation 4 games.

It will also be fully compatible with the PlayStation VR Headset and all of the PSVR Games currently available, though it is not known if the PSVR will see a new iteration.

Backwards Compatible Games

As of now, it has been confirmed that nearly all PlayStation 4 Games will be compatible with the PS5 console.

Mark Cerny confirmed during a tech spec reveal presentation that Sony looked at the top 100 played PS4 games to take advantage of the PS5’s “boost mode’, and “almost all” of them will be playable in that state on the PS5 at launch. You can see the known PS4 games receiving a significant boost here.

As for games that are backwards compatible, “select” PS4 games will benefit from Game Boost, which “may make PS4 games run with a higher or smoother frame rate”.

However, according to Sony CEO Jim Ryan, the PS5 will not have backwards compatibility support for the PS3, PS2, or PS1 console games.

When viewing your game hub on the PlayStation 5, any applicable games will show up a [Game Name] | PS4 – please take note of this if you have upgraded to the PS5 version of a multi-platform game. See How to Switch Game Versions for more information.
