Pikachu’s up to something for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be held in 2020, but in a changed capacity that will reflect the ongoing (and quickly spiking) COVID-19 pandemic. The better news is that for the 20th consecutive year, Pikachu is going to be there. And Pikachu is up to something.

On Thursday, Nov. 26, the giant Pikachu balloon will once again float among the skyscrapers of Manhattan. That inflated Pokémon will be complemented by “a troupe of dancing Pikachu [that] will deliver an electrifying performance,” The Pokémon Company said in a news release Monday.

Furthermore, The Pokémon Company said, “Pokémon fans will want to tune in to find out why they’re making a special appearance this year.” That’s either an exciting or ominous-sounding tease, but will likely be worth tuning in for. Will Pikachu announce first details on a Detective Pikachu sequel? Will Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Pikachu be added to Pokémon Go as a special costume? Will Pikachu release a noxious gas in New York City to hypnotize the city’s populace in an attempt to take over the world? Only The Pokémon Company knows!

Viewers will find out what surprise Pikachu has in store on Thursday, when the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs on NBC and Telemundo, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in all time zones.

For viewers wondering how Macy’s and NBC will handle this year’s Thanksgiving Day parade, the official website explains that the festivities won’t include the traditional 2.5-mile march through Manhattan, and more importantly, won’t include streets packed with parade spectators. “Instead it will be reimagined over the course of several days as a television-only event leading up to the live Thanksgiving Day broadcast that will feature the breadth of Macy’s signature elements,” Macy’s says. But you can still expect “giant character balloons, animated floats, incredible street performances, musical acts,” and an appearance from Santa Claus in the broadcast from 34th Street in New York.
