But one specific \u201990s reference in <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> has been fascinating fans for more than 20 years: the game\u2019s Christina-Aguilera-at-the-1999-Teen-Choice-Awards connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Maria, one of <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em>\u2019s antagonists, is clearly modeled after Aguilera\u2019s red carpet appearance at that inaugural Teen Choice Awards event. Aguilera, who was nominated for her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kIDWgqDBNXA\">Genie in a Bottle<\/a>\u201d video, showed up to the Fox network awards show wearing a raspberry cardigan, a pink and black leopard-print skirt, and a gold medallion body chain. That\u2019s nearly identical to the outfit worn by Maria in 2001\u2019s <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em>, which could imply two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Silent Hill team was inspired by Christina Aguilera to represent the villainous doppelganger of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2021\/2\/5\/22264705\/silent-hill-2-james-sunderland-isnt-the-antihero-hes-the-villain\">James Sunderland<\/a>\u2019s wife Mary<\/li>\n<li>James Sunderland watched the 1999 Teen Choice Awards and had impure thoughts about Christina Aguilera, manifesting her as the lustful version of his deceased wife<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">For the record, here is Christina Aguilera at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/silent-hill-2-owes-much-to-christina-aguilera-at-the-1999-teen-choice-awards-1.jpg\" alt=\"Singer Christina Aguilera at the Teen Choice Awards in 1999, wearing a pink sweater, and a pink-and-black leopard-print miniskirt, with a gold bodychain around her stomach\" title=\"Singer Christina Aguilera at the Teen Choice Awards in 1999, wearing a pink sweater, and a pink-and-black leopard-print miniskirt, with a gold bodychain around her stomach\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Photo: Ron Galella, Ltd.\/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">And here is Maria, as she appears in the original <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> (via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/460787\/play-silent-hill-2-enhanced-edition-pc-port-fan-project\">very good Enhanced Edition mod<\/a>) during her initial meeting with James:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/silent-hill-2-owes-much-to-christina-aguilera-at-the-1999-teen-choice-awards-2.jpg\" alt=\"Maria speaks to James Sunderland in a screenshot from Silent Hill 2; she\u2019s wearing the same outfit as Christina Aguilera at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards\" title=\"Maria speaks to James Sunderland in a screenshot from Silent Hill 2; she\u2019s wearing the same outfit as Christina Aguilera at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"I\u2019m afraid this is quite serious.\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The visual similarities are striking, so much so that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/460647\/silent-hill-2-sh2-remake-review-ps5-pc\"><em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> remake<\/a> developer Bloober Team and Konami have updated Maria\u2019s appearance for the new version \u2014&nbsp;possibly to finally disassociate Maria from Xtina. In the same initial meeting scene, we see that Maria is now wearing a red leather jacket and a black leopard print dress. Her butterfly tattoo has been moved to her chest, now that her midriff no longer abides late-\u201990s fashion trends.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/silent-hill-2-owes-much-to-christina-aguilera-at-the-1999-teen-choice-awards-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The developers of <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> have been pretty forthcoming about their influences, pointing to David Lynch films <em>Blue Velvet<\/em> and <em>Lost Highway<\/em> and Adrian Lyne\u2019s <em>Jacob\u2019s Ladder<\/em> as sources of inspiration. Stanley Kubrick was also a big influence, according to Japanese-language <em>Silent Hill 3 Official Complete Strategy Guide<\/em>, which touches on the overall series\u2019 inspirations, with developers noting that Vincent D\u2019Onofrio\u2019s Leonard \u201cGomer Pyle\u201d Lawrence served as the reference model for <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em>\u2019s Eddie Dombrowski.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">One other more subtle, but still important, visual influence comes from another piece of late \u201990s cinema: Simon West\u2019s <em>Con Air<\/em>. Like Maria, James\u2019 late wife Mary\u2019s appearance appears to have been strongly inspired by a real human. Mary\u2019s style appears to be lifted from Tricia Poe (played by Monica Potter), the wife of Cameron Poe (played by Nicolas Cage) in that memorable action movie. But for the fan who wants to one-up the know-it-all who points out that the first <em>Silent Hill<\/em> game was heavily informed by <em>Kindergarten Cop<\/em>, you\u2019re now armed (or mentally refreshed) with the knowledge of the Christina Aguilera at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards\/<em>Con Air<\/em>\/<em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> connection \u2014 with which you can kneecap any person trying to flex their survival horror trivia powers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Anyway, the <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> remake is out now on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
