Where do I want to be in five years? Do I believe in an afterlife? And what do the political and economic systems of the Imperium of Man in <em>Warhammer 40,000<\/em>\u2019s lore say about human nature?<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s exciting to see that academics agree, with many coming together to create the world\u2019s first academic conference dedicated to all things Warhammer. (Unfortunately, this just includes 40K, so nothing on <em>Age of Sigmar<\/em>.) The two-day conference was held at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, with iconic artist John Blanche serving as keynote speaker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Speeches concerned heady topics like the <a href=\"https:\/\/warhammer-conference.com\/the-incomplete-reformations-of-warhammer-40000\/\">impact of sixteenth-century history on the theology and iconography of the Imperial Cult<\/a>, the narrative role of the <a href=\"https:\/\/warhammer-conference.com\/who-is-the-enemy\/\">nefarious Genestealer Cults<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/warhammer-conference.com\/in-the-name-of-the-emperor-authority-and-pluralism\/\">the nature of authority in a setting<\/a> that worships an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24113824\/warhammer-40k-god-emperor-lore-dark-king-star-child-godblight\">unspeaking, undying God-Emperor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While much of the Warhammer hobby covers big, bombastic battles between Space Marines &#8212; often called \u201cbolter porn\u201d as a joke by the fanbase &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23592490\/best-warhammer-40k-novels-in-order-black-library-audible-horus-heresy-eisenhorn-gaunts-ghosts\">the novels<\/a> also cover a surprising amount of ground when it comes to theological, philosophical, and intellectual matters. In both the Horus Heresy series and the modern day writing, you can find characters arguing over the true nature of divinity, human nature, and government\u2019s obligation to man.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Sure, sometimes the people having those arguments are the 8 foot tall Roboute Guilliman, son of the Emperor, and his space elf companion, but that doesn\u2019t make the writing any less interesting. The first book of the Horus Heresy, <em>Horus Rising<\/em> by Dan Abnett, is actually largely composed of characters discussing the purpose of the Great Crusade and the Imperium itself. Not every book puts that much time into building an intellectual framework, but it\u2019s great to see that academics have noticed the depth of the setting and are celebrating it in a conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/warhammer-conference.com\/\">Videos from the conference are going live soon on the official site<\/a>.
