Indie filmmaker and horror buff Mark Duplass, who stars in the series and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2018\/5\/18\/17358046\/best-netflix-scary-horror-movies\">the two movies that began the franchise<\/a>, shows a lot of skin throughout the three episodes previewed at the festival, including both a lingering, loving, slow-zoom-in shot of his bare ass, and full-frontal nudity. At a Q&amp;A after the screening with Duplass and longtime producer-partner Patrick Brice, the focus on Duplass\u2019 body led one audience member to ask whether Duplass demanded to appear naked on the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cDo I insist on the nudity?\u201d Duplass laughed. \u201cOK, so I have a very strong opinion about male nudity, and on male nudity in horror films, and that\u2019s an hour-and-a-half conversation, but my feeling is the kind of nudity you want to see is not, <em>Oh my God, everybody wants to see this person naked, and they don&#8217;t want to be naked. How do we convince them to be naked so we can please the audience?<\/em> That&#8217;s the worst kind of nudity there can be. The best kind of nudity is <em>Nobody wants to see this person, and they\u2019re gonna do it anyway.<\/em> That way, there is zero exploitation \u2014 except for Patrick, who I&#8217;m totally comfortable exploiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThe only question has been, like, what parts can we show that are new?\u201d Brice added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cI mean, I\u2019m fine with it,\u201d Duplass said about the full-frontal image in particular, \u201cbecause most people [will be] watching this thing on a 42- to 55-inch screen. But [<em>points to the movie screen behind him<\/em>] this is really big. It\u2019s like \u2014&nbsp;we\u2019ve all shared something here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/creeps-mark-duplass-has-a-plan-for-zero-exploitation-nudity-in-horror-movies-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>The Creep Tapes<\/em> premiered during one of Fantastic Fest\u2019s secret screenings, where audiences are seated for a showing of an upcoming movie or TV series without knowing what they\u2019re going to see. The series was the fifth secret screening at the 2024 Fantastic Fest, after showings of Jason Reitman\u2019s comedy <em>Saturday Night<\/em>, Ali Abbasi\u2019s Donald Trump biopic <em>The Apprentice<\/em>,&nbsp;Scott Beck and Bryan Woods\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/horror\/455448\/heretic-hugh-grant-villain\">Hugh Grant-starring religious escape-room drama <em>Heretic<\/em><\/a>, and Michael Gracey\u2019s radical Robbie Williams biopic experiment <em>Better Man<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The Creep franchise focuses on a serial killer with a constantly changing name (Duplass) and a complicated relationship with a shaggy, snarling werewolf mask known to the fandom as Peachfuzz, for reasons revealed in the first movie. The movies and show are shot found-footage style, with an on-screen character handling a diegetic camera. The series reveals more about Peachfuzz\u2019s background, and finds him new victims to torment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201c<em>Creep<\/em> was the first film I made out of film school,\u201d Brice said at the Q&amp;A. \u201cI was thinking no one would ever watch it. It\u2019s been so great to have this to go back to, because it truly feels like we\u2019re going back to, like, being little children making movies. This was the same freedom I had with my friends when I took my mom\u2019s High-8 camera and was making films with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Duplass agreed: \u201cThis is what [Mark\u2019s brother and filmmaking partner Jay Duplass] and I were doing in the suburbs of New Orleans. Now I just get to do it with gray hair. It\u2019s fucking awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Asked why they\u2019ve returned to the Creep franchise again, Duplass joked that it\u2019s because his serial-killer protagonist is uplifting to see on screen: \u201cI mean, he&#8217;s such a good guy. The world needs more heroes,\u201d he laughed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThis is a very liberating character for me to play, for a number of reasons,\u201d Duplass said. \u201cA lot of the work I\u2019ve done before are nuanced dramedies where I\u2019m making sure I don\u2019t push too hard, making sure it\u2019s credible and natural. And this is just <em>Take everything off and do whatever the fuck we want to do.<\/em> It is so liberating. [\u2026] I go and do a show like <em>The Morning Show<\/em> that\u2019s got a crew of 300 people, and everything\u2019s so measured. And I love that world, I really appreciate it. But [<em>The Creep Tapes<\/em>] is never more than, like, five or six of us on set, and we stay in these houses that we shoot in, and we shoot in sequential order, and we come up with new scenes at night, and we eat our meals together. The magic of that is just very important to the other things I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Season 1 of <em>The Creep Tapes<\/em> debuts on Shudder and AMC+ on Nov. 15.
