Bob\u2019s a guy in hospital scrubs who just happens to be on a team exclusively populated by trained assassins, perfect soldier program rejects, and accidents of science who turned to super crime, all kitted out to the nines with super tech. Which, by the laws of all good Dirty Dozen-style narrative set ups, means he\u2019s must be the most terrifying guy here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">A quick shot of an iconic belt buckle from later in the trailer (and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/07\/thunderbolts-first-look-marvel-comic-con-1236021865\/\">confirmation from Deadline in July<\/a>), all but confirms his identity: Bob, played by Lewis Pullman (<em>Outer Range<\/em>, <em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>), is the MCU version of one of Marvel\u2019s most powerful and least stable superheroes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/thunderbolts-mysterious-bob-is-marvels-own-dark-superman.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There\u2019s only one Marvel superhero who wears a big S on his belt, goes by \u201cBob,\u201d and wouldn\u2019t be unusual to see in the institutional garb of a mental patient, and that\u2019s the Sentry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Created by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee in 2000\u2019s <em>Sentry<\/em> miniseries for Marvel\u2019s mature-fare imprint, Marvel Knights, Robert Reynolds wields cosmos-shaking power as the superhero known as the Sentry. Following an encounter with one of the world\u2019s innumerable attempts to reproduce Steve Rogers\u2019 super soldier serum, he gained Superman-like powers \u2014 including immense strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, enhanced senses, and solar energy absorption \u2014 and some extras, like molecular manipulation and mind manipulation. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/thunderbolts-mysterious-bob-is-marvels-own-dark-superman-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"Reynolds restored as the Sentry, in New Avengers #10.\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">His heroic adventures as the Sentry began even before the appearance of the Fantastic Four, and he was fast friends with the Avengers, Spider-Man, and basically everybody else on the good side of the Marvel universe. That is, until he realized that he was linked with an equally powerful and correspondingly evil entity known as the Void, and the only way to nullify it was to stop using his powers and make everyone in the universe forget that the Sentry had ever existed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That was the story, at least, until 2004\u2019s <em>New Avengers<\/em>, from writer Brian Michael Bendis and various artists, when the character was given a very post-9\/11 twist: Supervillains had mucked with Reynolds\u2019 mind to make him believe he had to stop being a superhero, and the awesome power of his subconscious psychic abilities had made the lie real. Since then, comics have gone back and forth with reveals and retcons, tweaking and changing who exactly Robert Reynolds, the Sentry, and the Void are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Did the Sentry make everyone forget him in order to counteract the Void and live as a normal man? Is the Void a mirror entity to the Sentry\u2019s powers, or Reynolds\u2019 own alternate personality, as expressed <em>with<\/em> the Sentry\u2019s powers? Is it a manifestation of Reynolds\u2019 fear of his misusing his abilities, brought to reality by his own psychic strength? Or was that fear itself implanted in Reynolds by a supervillain in order to destroy him and all memories of him? <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Thunderbolts*<\/em> has all of these explanations to choose from, on top of simply inventing their own bespoke version of the Void\/Sentry\/Robert dynamic. The only real throughline with the character is that he\u2019s a supremely powerful Superman analogue called the Sentry, whose presence attracts an equally powerful evil entity called the Void, which, itself, may or may not be a product of Reynolds\u2019 fragile psyche.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Does this mean the ultimate villain opposing the Thunderbolts will be the Void? Hopefully not, because that\u2019s exactly the plot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2015\/7\/16\/8974897\/suicide-squad-explainer\">David Ayer\u2019s <em>Suicide Squad<\/em><\/a>, just swapping out the Sentry for the similar \u201cI\u2019ve got an evil entity inside me\u201d character of the Enchantress. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But either way, we\u2019ll find out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/21452835\/new-marvel-movies-come-out-release-schedule\">on May 2, 2025<\/a>, when <em>Thunderbolts*<\/em> (or whatever it\u2019s called after we find out what the asterisk means) hits theaters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/marvel\/455057\/sentry-bob-thunderbolts\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new trailer for Marvel Studios\u2019 Thunderbolts* may not have revealed why there\u2019s an asterisk in the title \u2014 bracing for a Dark Avengers reveal at the end \u2014 but it did tease an unexpected addition to the team: Bob.
