When Astro Bot<\/em> was released in September, critics agreed on a lot: Astro Bot <\/em>rules<\/a>, and it\u2019s Sony\u2019s first real answer to Nintendo\u2019s iconic platformers. Nintendo\u2019s entries to the genre come up a lot when talking about Astro Bot<\/em>; it\u2019s near impossible to ignore the publisher\u2019s clear influence on the Sony platformer. Yes, Astro Bot<\/em> is an homage to Sony\u2019s PlayStation legacy, but it also honors and iterates on the best platformers to create something truly spectacular and wholly its own.<\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cgood artists copy, great artists steal<\/a>\u201d has been attributed to both Pablo Picasso and Steve Jobs, and it\u2019s a variation on T.S. Eliot\u2019s \u201cimmature poets imitate, mature poets steal\u201d quote, but regardless of who said it, it\u2019s something I\u2019ve been thinking about a lot while playing Astro Bot<\/em>. There may not be many more entirely new ideas left in life, but there are plenty of ways to put lots of different, recycled ideas together to make something unique \u2014 and that\u2019s the context in which I\u2019m seeing Astro Bot<\/em>\u2019s existence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Around the internet, I\u2019ve seen plenty of compilations comparing Astro Bot<\/em> to Nintendo\u2019s<\/a> (and other publishers\u2019) platformers: Astro Bot<\/em>\u2019s boost jump is reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine<\/em>\u2019s FLUDD; its crash site bots operate like Pikmin<\/a>; Astro Bot<\/em>\u2019s ride-on armadillo ball feels like Glover<\/em>; and his frog power-up acts a lot like springy boxing gloves in Arms<\/em>. Sometimes, these compilations are put together in a way that feels like a gotcha!<\/em>, but I don\u2019t see it that way. It\u2019s a good thing that Astro Bot<\/em> developer Team Asobi was influenced by all the best bits of other platformers. It\u2019s just how art and play work. In fact, a lot of these other games aren\u2019t the first example of these ideas and mechanics, and may not even be the direct influence for Team Asobi; just like Astro Bot<\/em>, these games are products of decades of good ideas that have been twisted, tweaked, and repurposed into something new.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite examples of this in Astro Bot<\/em> is the sponge power-up, as seen in the Bathhouse Battle level. Here, Astro literally turns into a sponge. On dry land, he\u2019s just kind of flat; it\u2019s not necessarily clear that he\u2019s porous. But when Astro hops into a tub of water, he soaks it all up to turn into a bloated version of himself \u2014 maybe quadruple his original size \u2014 with the ability to smash through things and spray water like a firehose. Both abilities come into play in clever ways throughout the level, be it using the water stored in your oversized body to inflate other sponges and reach higher ground or using it to water a little sapling and find a hidden secret. Of course, there\u2019s always the satisfaction of absolutely blasting your way through bamboo walls or, simply, your enemies.<\/p>\n

Astro\u2019s sponge power-up reminds me of Kirby\u2019s water balloon form in Kirby and the Forgotten Land<\/em>, where Kirby sucks up water from a spout to literally become a water balloon<\/a>. Kirby\u2019s water is similarly used to clear mud, water plants for secrets, and fight enemies. But the way the ability feels<\/em> in these two games couldn\u2019t be more different. Both Team Asobi and Kirby and the Forgotten Land<\/em> developer HAL Laboratory <\/em>used a similar concept \u2014 a trope that\u2019s been used in games for years \u2014 to create experiences that feel new and exciting.<\/p>\n

This is where that lesson \u2014 \u201cgood artists copy and great artists steal\u201d \u2014 comes in. Copying another means trying on another artist or developer\u2019s style and looking to recreate it closely; stealing, in the spirit of the original phrase, refers to pulling a concept and truly making it your own. <\/p>\n
