The short version is, pretty damn good: Within a few hours of launch it sailed well past 200,000 concurrent players on Steam (the current peak sits at 225,254) and a &#8220;very positive&#8221; rating across more than 27,000 user reviews.<\/p>\n<p>The acclaim isn&apos;t universal. Common complaints in Steam reviews include a short campaign and not-great AI companions, lack of ultrawide support, the game&apos;s use of Epic Online Services (required for crossplay between Steam and Epic), and\u2014of course\u2014troubles with online servers. But as redditor <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Spacemarine\/comments\/1fcwsi7\/200k_concurrent_players_middle_of_the_us_workday\/\">Ixziga<\/a> pointed out, racking up more than 200,000 concurrents in the middle of a North American work day\u2014a Monday, no less\u2014is no mean feat.<\/p>\n<p>It also represents something of a bounceback for Space Marine 2, which as recorded by SteamDB (via the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240905202500\/https:\/\/steamdb.info\/app\/2183900\/charts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayback Machine<\/a>) was saddled with a &#8220;mixed&#8221; user rating when the advanced access period first went live on September 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1740px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.03%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"tGffUrxE9aCmDCtBmbCFHS\" name=\"wh2.png\" alt=\"Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Steam user reviews as of September 5 2024\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/space-marine-2-cruises-past-225000-concurrent-users-on-steam-within-hours-of-full-release.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"1\" width=\"1740\" height=\"975\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"expandable\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: SteamDB (via The Wayback Machine))<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/space-marine-2s-epic-games-client-on-steam-is-for-crossplay-confirms-publisher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurogamer<\/a>, those early negative reviews were prompted primarily by the Epic Online Services installation, which sparked something of a small review-bombing campaign: Not enough to have any lasting impact, but sufficient to prompt a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/community.focus-entmt.com\/focus-entertainment\/space-marine-2\/forums\/27-bugs\/threads\/43800-quick-note-on-the-most-common-issues#post-207833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from publisher Focus Entertainment that the EOS client &#8220;was implemented to support optional cross-play between Steam and Epic players and to synchronize friend lists between the two stores,&#8221; and that linking accounts is entirely optional.<\/p>\n<p>Space Marine 2 is also doing well on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/warhammer-40000-space-marine-ii\/critic-reviews\/?platform=pc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>, where it holds an 83% aggregate review score. We weren&apos;t quite so enthusiastic about it in our own <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-2-review\/\">review<\/a>, finding the impressive spectacle wears thin a bit quickly, although developer Saber Interactive&apos;s &#8220;deep love&#8221; for the Warhammer 40,000 setting is &#8220;clearly genuine.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Players are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Spacemarine\/comments\/1fcd3gd\/im_completely_new_to_warhammer_40k_what_the_fuck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noticing that commitment<\/a> as well, and I&apos;m not talking about just the WH40K veterans.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1478px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:74.36%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLUP5mVmfyHX9BDxm9pX6S\" name=\"wh1.png\" alt=\"I'm completely new to Warhammer 40k. That last one is a little baffling: By its very nature\u2014a small band of bipedal tanks squaring off against literal hordes of xenos\u2014you&apos;d think a horde mode would be in there right from the outset. Instead, it&apos;s planned to go live in the fourth season, which puts it somewhere in mid-2025. A ploy to bring players back after they&apos;ve grown bored and moved on to other things, perhaps?
