This week, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power<\/em><\/a> expanded significantly on its depiction of ancient halflings, and in doing so gave me a great gift. <\/p>\n

By introducing the concept of S\u00fbza-t, The Rings of Power<\/a><\/em> let me look my co-workers straight in the (video call) eyes and explain that the heroes of The Lord of the Rings<\/em> are actually called Maura Labingi and Banaz\u00eer Galpsi.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the course of this week\u2019s episode, our harfoot lasses Nori and Poppy (Markella Kavenagh and Megan Richards) encounter another society of halflings \u2014 the stoors. They\u2019re treated with suspicion until the stoor leader, Gundabel (Tanya Moodie), realizes that they\u2019re all long-estranged family, in a way. It turns out that Nori and Poppy\u2019s harfoot band are the descendants of a group of adventurous stoors, who set off ages ago in search of a prophesied paradise of abundant rivers and green growing fields, called S\u00fbza-t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What is S\u00fbza-t?<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This one\u2019s easy: S\u00fbza-t is the land of abundant rivers and green growing fields that halflings settled roughly 1,300 years before the events of The Hobbit<\/a><\/em> and The Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/em>, uniting the harfoots, stoors, and fallohides into a single halfling culture. We know it by its English name: the Shire<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The episode doesn\u2019t explain that S\u00fbza-t is synonymous with the Shire, because these hobbits haven\u2019t gotten there yet. But there\u2019s another reason that\u2019s really going to bake your noodle: S\u00fbza-t isn\u2019t an ancient name for paradise that was replaced with \u201cthe Shire\u201d once hobbits settled there. It\u2019s the current<\/em> name for the Shire. Because the The Lord of the Rings<\/em> was \u201ctranslated\u201d into English.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

Get on J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s level<\/h2>\n

Writing fantasy epics was never Tolkien\u2019s day job, even when his books became bestsellers. But when we call him an \u201cEnglish professor,\u201d it conjures up students appreciating great works of contemporary fiction \u2014 and that wasn\u2019t Tolkien\u2019s specialty at all. Tolkien taught historical English linguistics<\/em>, not English literature, specifically Modern English\u2019s precursors, Middle and Old English. He thought Shakespeare was overrated, and the most recent texts on his syllabus were from the 14th century. Before he wrote The Hobbit<\/em>, his biggest claim to fame was as the foremost Beowulf<\/em> scholar and translator of his generation. <\/p>\n

It was this specialization, born from his lifelong passion for etymology, that led to the creation of Middle-earth. Tolkien didn\u2019t start with a hobby of writing fantasy novels \u2014 he started with a hobby of inventing fictional languages. The history of the elves, with their migrations, conflicts, and schisms, was created to give the history behind their detailed etymological shifts. The languages weren\u2019t invented for his stories, the stories were invented for the languages<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tolkien brought this conceptual frame, the frame of his day job, to the text of The Hobbit<\/em> and The Lord of the Rings<\/em> themselves. Both stories are, as quietly stated within their own text, translations of The Red Book of Westmarch<\/em>, history of the War of the Ring written by the hobbits who were there: Bilbo, Frodo (that\u2019s the book Frodo\u2019s writing in Peter Jackson\u2019s movies), and Sam. And the hobbits didn\u2019t write it in English. They wrote it in the totally fictional common tongue they shared with their neighboring human societies, Westron. <\/p>\n

Tolkien \u201ctranslated\u201d a great deal of the Westron place names and proper nouns into corresponding English terms or new words with the same roots as the \u201coriginal\u201d Westron names. Which is to say: Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings<\/em> in English, but he couldn\u2019t help inventing yet another<\/em> line of etymological history while he was at it. <\/p>\n

He created the Westron word s\u00fbza<\/em>, to mean a province or set area of land, and -t<\/em> to have the same function as \u201cthe.\u201d Thus, the Westron term for the Shire is S\u00fbza-t<\/em>. Frodo\u2019s name contained the real Germanic root frod-<\/em>, meaning \u201cwise,\u201d so Tolkien invented the Westron root maur-<\/em> to mean the same thing. \u201cSamwise\u201d derives from roots meaning \u201csimpleminded,\u201d so he invented the Westron term banaz\u00eer<\/em> with the same meaning. In Tolkien\u2019s Westron, kali<\/em> means to be happy or joyful, while razar<\/em> means apple<\/a>. <\/p>\n

What does this mean for Middle-earth? <\/h2>\n

Well, on the one hand, nothing! The fact is that Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings<\/em> in English. He was just a compulsive language inventor, and exercised that interest in the appendices of The Return of the King<\/em> by providing fictional \u201ctranslation notes\u201d on the character names, just as he would have done for any of his academic studies. This is just how he had fun<\/em>. <\/p>\n

But on the other hand, it\u2019s also an invitation to view The Lord of the Rings<\/em> as something other than a perfect text. Tolkien was renowned as a translator, and he would have been very aware that any translation of a text contains at least a little bias, omission, mistranslation, and loss of cultural context. It\u2019s an invitation to read between the lines<\/a>. <\/p>\n

But also, and perhaps most importantly, it means that Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, and Pippin Took aren\u2019t their names.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The hobbit heroes of The Lord of the Rings<\/em> are Maura Labingi, Ban Galpsi, Kali Brandagamba, and Razar T\u00fbk.<\/p>\n
