Our latest update to this list added <em>Tetris Effect: Connected<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6qfkt9\"><strong>Alan Wake 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-1.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Wake standing in front of an ominous neon-lit altar with a pistol in hand in Alan Wake 2.\" title=\"Alan Wake standing in front of an ominous neon-lit altar with a pistol in hand in Alan Wake 2.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Remedy Entertainment\/Epic Games Publishing\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bold move, on the part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23961028\/remedy-connected-universe-mcu-alan-wake-2-control\">Remedy Entertainment<\/a>, to actually make a decade-late sequel to a game that defined the studio, but whose ambitions it has arguably outgrown in the years since \u2014 particularly in its stunning, architectural action game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/2019\/8\/26\/20829631\/control-review-pc-ps4-xbox-one-ray-tracing\"><em>Control<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>Might a trip back to <em>Alan Wake<\/em>\u2019s spooky woods, so obviously haunted by the ghosts of Stephen King and David Lynch, not feel like a step back?<\/p>\n<p>Hardly. What Remedy created by bringing all its experience to bear on its most beloved creation is nothing short of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23932094\/alan-wake-2-review-ps5-xbox-series-x-pc\">survival horror masterpiece<\/a>, as well as a meta mystery about its own creation. Horror author Alan is joined by a co-protagonist, FBI agent Saga Anderson, who\u2019s investigating a case linked to Alan\u2019s disappearance over a decade earlier. Using this dual setup \u2014 impressively, you can fluidly switch between Alan\u2019s and Saga\u2019s stories essentially at your discretion \u2014 Remedy works outward from the original game\u2019s premise, twisting it into a methodical detective thriller one moment and a reality-bending cosmic horror the next. <em>Alan Wake 2<\/em> announces the start of a new generation of blockbuster horror gaming. <em>\u2014Oli Welsh<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"qwCqjW\"><strong>Animal Well<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-2.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot of Animal Well depicting a large statue of a dog\u2019s grinning head, with a nearby massive ghost of a similar-looking dog hovering and grinning creepily at a tiny egg (the game\u2019s protagonist) bouncing away from it towards the right side of the screen\" title=\"A screenshot of Animal Well depicting a large statue of a dog\u2019s grinning head, with a nearby massive ghost of a similar-looking dog hovering and grinning creepily at a tiny egg (the game\u2019s protagonist) bouncing away from it towards the right side of the screen\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Billy Basso\/Bigmode\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This strange, spooky puzzle adventure is being compared to the 2012 indie classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2012\/10\/12\/3493670\/fez-review-living-in-spin\"><em>Fez<\/em><\/a> \u2014 and honestly, there can be no higher praise than that. It\u2019s tough to describe without spoiling it, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/24151337\/animal-well-review-pc-ps5-switch\">this is a game in which the mystery of discovery is paramount<\/a>, and which disguises many important facets of its true nature until you\u2019re deep into it. It\u2019s one of those games that is best played with notebook to hand, and that could easily turn you into an obsessive conspiracy theorist if you get sucked in.<\/p>\n<p>For now, it\u2019s enough to know that you play as an egg-blob-thing living in a spectral forest inhabited by exquisitely animated, ghostly animals. The game unfolds like a Metroidvania, as you build out its 2D platforming map in non-linear fashion by collecting gear \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/24156522\/animal-well-metroidvania-not\">but it\u2019s even more inscrutable and mysterious than that might suggest<\/a>, and really operates like a giant puzzle written in a language you have to learn as you go. It\u2019s also gorgeous, drawn in translucent, glowing pixel art that\u2019s at once ephemeral and materially tactile. A seven-year labor of love by developer Billy Basso, it was well worth the wait. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"xxx55u\"><strong>Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-3.jpg\" alt=\"An Armored Core wielding an assault rifle faces a giant mecha in a screenshot from Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon\" title=\"An Armored Core wielding an assault rifle faces a giant mecha in a screenshot from Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: FromSoftware\/Bandai Namco\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d asked us 10 years ago if a new Armored Core game would make our list of the best PlayStation 5 games, we\u2019d have said we didn\u2019t think a new Armored Core game would even exist by then. But happily, FromSoftware decided to cash in some of the huge cultural and financial status it earned from the phenomenal successes of Dark Souls, <em>Bloodborne<\/em>, and <em>Elden Ring<\/em> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23842706\/armored-core-6-review-fromsoftware\">revive its old-school mech combat franchise<\/a>. It\u2019s fitting that it pops up on this list, too, because <em>Armored Core<\/em> was historically a PlayStation series (the first game was even published by Sony).<\/p>\n<p>What you get in <em>Fires of Rubicon<\/em> is a ferociously enjoyable, hugely customizable mission-based vehicular combat game with a surprisingly engaging storyline that creeps up on you. It doesn\u2019t really have much in common with the Soulslikes that made FromSoftware\u2019s name \u2014 unless you count the fantastically detailed art, finely crafted combat mechanics, and epic boss encounters that will test you to the limit. OK, maybe it does have a few things in common with them after all. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"jGA6jw\"><strong>Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-4.jpg\" alt=\"Astro jumping in Cooling Springs in Astro\u2019s Playroom\" title=\"Astro jumping in Cooling Springs in Astro\u2019s Playroom\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Team Asobi\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/em> is themed around the idea that you\u2019re running around&nbsp;<em>inside<\/em>&nbsp;your working PlayStation 5. The first area, Cooling Springs, is filled with waterslides and glaciers, implying that it\u2019s keeping the heat down to a manageable level. This cute theming runs throughout the game, showing off different chunks of the hardware.<\/p>\n<p>As in any great platformer, it\u2019s a treat to just run around the environment in&nbsp;<em>Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/em>. Astro doesn\u2019t have as wide a range of talents as, say, Mario in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/super-mario-odyssey\/39528\"><em>Super Mario Odyssey<\/em><\/a>, but he does have a handy jetpack, a fierce spin attack, and the ability to tug on ropes real hard. Each of these activates the new haptics in the DualSense controller, showing off the nuances of the enhanced vibration technology. As just a simple example, if you walk across a glass surface as Astro, you\u2019ll feel the small tippy-taps of each step within the controller. Tugging on a rope to launch an underground enemy into the sky yields a far different experience, with a more intense vibration within the whole of the controller, followed by the&nbsp;<em>ka-thunk<\/em>&nbsp;of Astro falling back on his robutt.<\/p>\n<p>Without playing it, it\u2019s easy to write off&nbsp;<em>Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/em>&nbsp;as a silly, ignorable pack-in game, something to fill up your system storage while you wait for the&nbsp;<em>actual<\/em>&nbsp;games to download. But it turns out that this is one of the best platformers Sony has ever made, matching the charm and fluidity of a Nintendo platformer while also demonstrating the power of this new console. <em>\u2014Russ Frushtick<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"uvmdWB\"><strong>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games.png\" alt=\"Four of the main characters in Baldur\u2019s Gate 3 stand together on a cliffside, their backs to the camera, as though overlooking the adventure ahead\" title=\"Four of the main characters in Baldur\u2019s Gate 3 stand together on a cliffside, their backs to the camera, as though overlooking the adventure ahead\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Larian Studios\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even after a very impressive three-year early-access period on PC, it\u2019s still a shock how big a critical and commercial hit Larian Studios\u2019 hardcore Dungeons &amp; Dragons-based role-playing game turned out to be. It\u2019s also surprising how well the Belgian studio has adapted this very computer-centric genre to console; <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> feels perfectly at home on PS5.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps thanks to the popularization of D&amp;D via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23919779\/dnd-dungeons-dragons-actual-play-tv-show-encounter-party\">actual-play series<\/a>, the whole world seems primed and ready for a game like this \u2014 and Larian overdelivers in spectacular fashion. <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23851111\/baldurs-gate-3-dungeons-dragons-dnd-ttrpg-spell-slots\">as close to tabletop role-playing<\/a> as you can get in video games, delivering strong storytelling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23835927\/baldurs-gate-3-astarion-tiktok-bg3\">indelible characters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23827417\/baldurs-gate-3-co-op-campaign-tabletop-rpg\">incredible flexibility and player agency<\/a>, and the requisite side order of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23932384\/baldurs-gate-3-dark-urge-bg3-great-fun-memes\">messiness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23843312\/baldurs-gate-3-boss-fights-tough-strategy-luck\">happy chaos<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23827294\/baldurs-gate-3-couples-game\">barely disguised horniness<\/a>. All this, and the PS5 version offers split-screen co-op, too. It\u2019s simply one of the best role-playing games of all time. \u2014<em>OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"CJFaJF\"><strong>Cyberpunk 2077<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-5.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot of protagonist V firing a weapon at a Barghest armored trooper in Cyberpunk 2077\u2019s Phantom Liberty expansion.\" title=\"A screenshot of protagonist V firing a weapon at a Barghest armored trooper in Cyberpunk 2077\u2019s Phantom Liberty expansion.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: CD Projekt Red\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Making this list is quite the turnaround for a game that started out with an ignominious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/12\/17\/22188013\/cyberpunk-2077-ps4-refunds-playstation-store\">delisting from the PlayStation Store<\/a> due to the poor performance of the PS4 version. But a Herculean effort from developer CD Projekt Red turned <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> into a definitive modern first-person shooter-RPG. First, the native PS5 version radically improved with tech and visual upgrades; then, 2023\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23880909\/cyberpunk-2077-phantom-liberty-review-patch-2-0-expansion\"><em>Phantom Liberty<\/em><\/a> expansion ushered in sweeping gameplay updates as well as a compelling new storyline.<\/p>\n<p>All this sealed what should have been the cast-iron appeal of the original game: a 1980s-inflected cyberpunk fantasia that mixes the best of Deus Ex and Grand Theft Auto, <em>Blade Runner<\/em> and <em>The Matrix<\/em>. <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> is maybe not quite as cool as it thinks it is, but that can be part of its charm, and the makers of The Witcher games haven\u2019t lost their talent for deft characterization, engrossing side-stories, and a kind of cynical romanticism. Plus, you get to be Keanu Reeves\u2019 best friend \u2014 who could resist? <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aYbifo\"><strong>Deathloop<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-6.jpg\" alt=\"Colt kicks an enemy in Deathloop\" title=\"Colt kicks an enemy in Deathloop\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Arkane Studios\/Bethesda Softworks\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the time I went through my final run of <em>Deathloop<\/em>, I thought I would\u2019ve walked away from the game feeling like a superpowered, time-bending assassin. Instead, the game made me feel like a masterful speedrunner.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because there\u2019s only one way to succeed in this time-looping game: To win, I must memorize the routines of all my assassination targets throughout four unique times of the day. Not only that, I have to set up specific scenarios so I can put them all at the right place at the right time to get eliminated. Mastering everything I needed to know took around 20 hours of living the same day over and over again. The payoff for all that hard work had me at the edge of my seat.<\/p>\n<p>The endgame scenario for <em>Deathloop<\/em> requires me to take out each of my targets in a single run. It felt like setting up dominos that would then smoothly fall down in the most stylish way possible. The excitement of executing a well-made plan armed with knowledge \u2014 and a powerful arsenal of weapons and superpowers \u2014 made the hours of investigation and prep work feel worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p><em>Deathloop<\/em> still has a handful of mysteries left for me to unravel, and I can\u2019t wait to uncover all of Blackreef\u2019s secrets. \u2014<em>Jeff Ramos<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"F0sBMd\"><strong>Death Stranding: Director\u2019s Cut<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-1.png\" alt=\"A man in a golden skull mask prepares to conjure a monster in Kojima Production\u2019s Death Stranding\" title=\"A man in a golden skull mask prepares to conjure a monster in Kojima Production\u2019s Death Stranding\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Kojima Productions\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Death Stranding: Director\u2019s Cut<\/em> is the definitive way to play one of the strangest games of the past few years. Where 2019\u2019s <em>Death Stranding<\/em> welcomed a dedicated audience \u2014 and a good chunk of players that quickly bounced off \u2014 <em>Director\u2019s Cut<\/em> makes Hideo Kojima\u2019s independent debut more accessible without sacrificing its unique identity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Death Stranding: Director\u2019s Cut<\/em> still asks Sam Porter Bridges to walk across a condensed version of the United States, precariously stacking packages on his back. But this time, Sam has more tools in the initial leg of his cross-country journey. Instead of spending the first 15 hours walking around with a rope as your only weapon, you can quickly get a gun that stuns enemies with lightning. And instead of winging it in your first combat scenario with a new piece of gear, the re-release of <em>Death Stranding<\/em> offers a substantial firing range for you to test your loadout.<\/p>\n<p>But for all of its fancy new toys, <em>Death Stranding<\/em> is still a game about doing the grunt work necessary to connect with others. Its script can be metaphorically clumsy, but it never stumbles in expressing those metaphors through the gameplay itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nobody has ever accused Hideo Kojima of subtlety, but it\u2019s <em>Death Stranding: Director\u2019s Cut<\/em>\u2019s smallest changes that make it so much easier to recommend. \u2014<em>Ryan Gilliam<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/22688402\/death-stranding-directors-cut-review-ps5-changes\">Read our full review<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"qEkflB\"><strong>Disco Elysium: The Final Cut<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-7.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot shows a shootout in the street in Disco Elysium\" title=\"A screenshot shows a shootout in the street in Disco Elysium\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: ZA\/UM\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A grungy detective story about politics, alcoholism, and failure seems like fodder for a visual novel, walking simulator, or maybe horror game. But in fact, <em>Disco Elysium<\/em>, by Estonian art collective ZA\/UM, is a role-playing game. And a very, very good one. On this list, only <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> can compete with it in terms of the dizzying freedom it offers the player in how they make choices, define their character, and respond to situations.<\/p>\n<p>Although <em>Disco Elysium<\/em> was deeply influenced by tabletop RPGs, don\u2019t expect much turn-based combat. Do expect a deep and fascinating system for skills and leveling \u2014 in this game, ideas like feminism are stat buffs \u2014 and do expect to build and explore your detective character\u2019s psychology and worldview through tortured, sometimes amusingly overwritten internal dialogues with different aspects of his own psyche. The backdrop is a noir-ish murder-mystery in a dilapidated town that\u2019s part 1970s, part steampunk. <em>Disco Elysium <\/em>is utterly idiosyncratic; there\u2019s nothing else like it, and probably never will be. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dEY2VL\"><strong>Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-8.jpg\" alt=\"The Arisen fights some undead zombie soldier creature things in a desert by a cliff in Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2.\" title=\"The Arisen fights some undead zombie soldier creature things in a desert by a cliff in Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Capcom\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of epic fantasy RPGs on this list already \u2014 including deep, dense masterpieces such as <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> and <em>Elden Ring<\/em> \u2014 so why would we need another? To be honest, you really need to play Capcom\u2019s unique take on the ubiquitous genre to answer that question for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>This is a game that\u2019s slow to reveal itself, and initially a little confusing and even janky. But eventually you realize it\u2019s not a technical game like those others I mentioned, but a constantly surprising fantasy adventure simulator that unfolds in real time. With its genuinely wild world, unpredictable monsters, and even more unpredictable Pawn NPCs that fight alongside you, <em>Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2<\/em> is guaranteed to generate gaming stories you\u2019ll never forget. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"qDBN4b\"><strong>Elden Ring<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-9.jpg\" alt=\"A Tarnished on horseback leaps across a cavern in a screenshot from Elden Ring\" title=\"A Tarnished on horseback leaps across a cavern in a screenshot from Elden Ring\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: FromSoftware\/Bandai Namco\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The intricate, demanding action-RPG format FromSoftware started with <em>Demon\u2019s Souls <\/em>gets blown out into an epic open-world adventure in <em>Elden Ring<\/em>, and miraculously loses nothing in the transition. What it gains is sheer scale, breadth to go with the traditional Soulslike depth, as well as a sense of freedom and discovery that the warrens of the Dark Souls games could never provide. But it\u2019s still as mysterious and sorrowful as fans of From\u2019s string of dark fantasy masterpieces have come to expect.<\/p>\n<p>You have to be up for a challenge: <em>Elden Ring<\/em> is still not an easy game, although like its predecessors its difficulty has been overstated. This is, as ever, a game in which patience, restraint, and planning will take you just as far if not further than razor-sharp reactions, even in some of the most testing boss encounters in gaming history. But the openness of <em>Elden Ring<\/em>\u2019s world, and the sheer flexibility of its class designs, make it From\u2019s most inviting game to date, without sacrificing any of its imposing stature. A modern classic. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hIEOOc\"><strong>Final Fantasy 14<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-2.png\" alt=\"A crowd of characters of various races in splendid outfits walk through a medieval setting in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail\" title=\"A crowd of characters of various races in splendid outfits walk through a medieval setting in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Square Enix\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Final Fantasy 14 <\/em>is the only massively multiplayer role-playing game to truly emerge from <em>World of Warcraft<\/em>\u2019s shadow, and to rival Blizzard\u2019s game for popularity, in 20 years. It almost never happened. On its original launch in 2010, it was a disastrous failure, but Square Enix doubled down and enlisted producer Naoki Yoshida to relaunch it in a completely revamped version in 2013. Moving from PlayStation 3 to PS4 and now PS5 over that time, it has steadily built in reputation and popularity, and it can now be considered one of the all-time titans of the genre. Gaming has rarely seen a comeback story like it.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for its success aren\u2019t complicated, but they must have been near-impossible to pull off. It\u2019s a beautiful world, with strong storylines and appealing characters, deeply grounded in Final Fantasy lore and fan service. It\u2019s a solid MMORPG with great flexibility and individuality in the character classes, and fun PvE dungeons and raids. It puts players first, even implementing a \u201cstory mode\u201d that allows players to solo climactic multiplayer content. And \u2014 the trickiest feat of all \u2014 it plays beautifully on console, something no other MMORPG (save perhaps its predecessor, <em>Final Fantasy 11<\/em>) has managed. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WTWWBe\"><strong>God of War Ragnar\u00f6k<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-3.png\" alt=\"Kratos winds his right fist back to punch a lizard monster in God of War Ragnarok.\" title=\"Kratos winds his right fist back to punch a lizard monster in God of War Ragnarok.\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Santa Monica Studio\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Santa Monica Studio\u2019s grandstanding cinematic beat-\u2019em-up is the latest perfection of a certain kind of high-gloss, low-brain-cell entertainment Sony has always done so well. That\u2019s not to say it\u2019s not clever \u2014 there\u2019s a very good, well-balanced action game in here, which interlocks neatly with some understated but satisfying RPG-lite character advancement. There\u2019s also a smart script that assembles a lovable family of weirdos around our gruff, god-killing hero, Kratos, as it explores the soapier side of Norse mythology. And it\u2019s topped off with the absolutely inspired casting of Richard Schiff (<em>The West Wing<\/em>\u2019s Toby) as an irritable, grousing Odin.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just that it all goes down so easy \u2014 intentionally so. This isn\u2019t <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> or <em>Elden Ring<\/em>; it\u2019s a largely on-rails spectacle full of delightfully brainless button-mashing, surprisingly touching acting, and a steady drumbeat of Big Moments to keep you alert. It also looks incredible, considering it was a cross-generational release with PlayStation 4. Just an extremely solid blockbuster. \u2014<em>OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"QHvj5H\"><strong>Gran Turismo 7<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-10.jpg\" alt=\"an Alfa Romeo racing car crossing the finish line on the Trial Mountain circuit in Gran Turismo 7\" title=\"an Alfa Romeo racing car crossing the finish line on the Trial Mountain circuit in Gran Turismo 7\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Polyphony Digital\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Somehow, over 25 years in, a PlayStation console just doesn\u2019t feel complete until it has its Gran Turismo game. That happened for PS5 in 2022 when it got <em>GT7<\/em>, which, despite some initial missteps around the grindiness of the economy and some overpriced microtransactions, is actually one of the most roundly satisfying, accessible, and just plain fun games in the series\u2019 history.<\/p>\n<p>Joyfully, instead of chasing trends, Polyphony Digital leans into Gran Turismo\u2019s unique and slightly stuffy character to make a game that\u2019s endearing in the way that it overflows with a nerdy love of cars and racing. The driving simulation is excellent and the photorealistic visuals are peerless, of course \u2014 but what reels you in is the charming single-player Caf\u00e9 mode that takes you on a guided tour of the game\u2019s thoughtfully selected garage, complete with sweetly enthusiastic talking heads.<\/p>\n<p>In a genre that often focuses on customization and box-ticking features, <em>Gran Turismo 7 <\/em>feels wonderfully authored and personal in all its myriad activities, from licence tests to mission challenges or the Scapes photo mode. It also has, in GT Sport, a superb online racing suite that\u2019s both accessible and fair. Gran Turismo is still the thinking person\u2019s racing series. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d3ho3W\"><strong>Hades<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-11.jpg\" alt=\"A character stands on a bridge with a glowing orb in front of them\" title=\"A character stands on a bridge with a glowing orb in front of them\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Supergiant Games\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you only get one indie game for your PS5, make it Supergiant Games\u2019 definitive dungeon crawl set in the world of Greek myth. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/2020\/9\/24\/21453043\/hades-review-switch-windows-early-access-supergiant-roguelite-impressions\"><em>Hades<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>swept every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22167819\/hades-game-of-the-year-2020\">game of the year<\/a> award in 2020 \u2014 a rare feat for a small independent production \u2014 before it had even landed on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. It\u2019s not hard to understand why. It\u2019s a game of immense depth but also huge charm, that\u2019s as sophisticated in its funny, gossipy storytelling as it is in its razor-sharp combat and roguelike-inspired structure.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hades<\/em> casts the player as Zagreus, the rebellious son of Hades, lord of the Underworld, who\u2019s making repeated attempts to escape his father\u2019s realm. Every run takes you a little further through a randomized labyrinth of deadly rooms, using random boons and weapons bestowed upon Zagreus by the indulgent gods of Olympus. <em>Hades <\/em>is never the same, but you\u2019re always mastering it, and discovering more about its sharply written gallery of gods; also, the mythical setting, where death is a trifle and immortality is a bore, is a perfect fit for the <em>Groundhog Day<\/em> action of a roguelike. Simply put, a masterpiece. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Kcbf4z\"><strong>Helldivers 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-12.jpg\" alt=\"Helldivers carrying guns battle alien bugs in a snowy landscape, with explosions in the background\" title=\"Helldivers carrying guns battle alien bugs in a snowy landscape, with explosions in the background\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Arrowhead Game Studios\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What if <em>Starship Troopers<\/em> was a co-operative, third-person shooter instead of a satirical sci-fi movie?<em> <\/em>It would be awesome, that\u2019s what. Arrowhead Game Studios\u2019 sleeper hit is a very simple formula, and that\u2019s why it works so well. Most of its best ideas were already worked out in its 2015 predecessor; what this sequel does is to transplant those ideas from a top-down, isometric blaster into a full-fledged, fully 3D bug-battling warzone.<\/p>\n<p>The response from players to this instantly appealing concept was so immediate that Arrowhead\u2019s servers were completely overwhelmed at launch. Once the dust has settled, what\u2019s revealed is just a perfect, no-frills online game for enjoying with a squad of pals: tactical, lethal, surprising, often tense or funny, and garnished with some juicily unsubtle satire. There\u2019s even a massively multiplayer element whereby the whole player-base works together to unlock new challenges. This is what live-service games should be like. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"J1fSr4\"><strong>Hitman: World of Assassination<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-13.jpg\" alt=\"Agent 47 aims a rifle at a motor race in a big city in Hitman: World of Assassination\" title=\"Agent 47 aims a rifle at a motor race in a big city in Hitman: World of Assassination\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: IO Interactive\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s never been anything else quite like IO\u2019s Hitman games, whose genre could be described as \u201cstealth murder comedy by way of improv theater.\u201d Though they have all the trappings of cool video game ultraviolence, they\u2019re up to something much more sly and subversive, with each level a giant, fascinating social machine to poke around before you throw a murderous spanner into it.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s never been a better Hitman release than the wonderful <em>World of Assassination<\/em>, a kind of best-of compilation of the most recent trilogy of Hitman games. Along with all those dazzling levels, you get a broad and highly entertaining suite of game modes, including player-created contracts, time-limited elusive targets, and the challenging escalations. The infinite murder simulator of the roguelike-inspired Freelancer mode is the cherry on top. In a very real sense, it\u2019s the only Hitman game you will ever need. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lpNISh\"><strong>Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-4.png\" alt=\"A screenshot from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth showing four of the main characters\" title=\"A screenshot from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth showing four of the main characters\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio\/Sega\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Yakuza games, now known by the translation of their original Japanese title Like a Dragon, are an acquired taste, but a taste that has now been acquired by millions. There\u2019s perhaps never been a better time to get involved: <em>Infinite Wealth <\/em>is the most ambitious, surreal, emotional, hilarious, and just plain huge game in the series yet \u2014 once it gets going.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to get through hours of backstory and exposition first, filling you in on the events of (at least) 7 games in this soapy series. Once you do, though, an astonishing playground opens up for Ichiban, Kiryu, and friends in Hawaii (the series\u2019 first detour from Japan), with deep, silly turn-based combat, hours of drama, and dozens of diversions and minigames, including surprisingly full-fledged knock-offs of Pok\u00e9mon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/24050765\/like-a-dragon-infinite-wealth-animal-crossing-minigame-dondoko-island-yakuza\">Animal Crossing<\/a>, and Crazy Taxi. An endearingly barmy hymn to excess that keeps on giving. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4sgoUT\"><strong>Pacific Drive<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-5.png\" alt=\"Pacific Drive promo art of a car approaching an abandoned gas station\" title=\"Pacific Drive promo art of a car approaching an abandoned gas station\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Ironwood Studios\/Kepler Interactive\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a real oddity: a strange, sometimes exasperating, often completely enthralling mix of driving simulator, roguelike, and scavenge-and-craft survival game. In <em>Pacific Drive<\/em>, you explore an irradiated wilderness in the Pacific Northwest, where some gigantic science experiment went wrong decades previously. In the Zone, reality and the laws of physics are coming apart. Fortunately you have the ultimate vehicle for exploring this landscape: an old station wagon.<\/p>\n<p>This rickety old car makes for an unlikely, but brilliant, video game protagonist: Although you often get out and explore on foot, the station wagon is the heart of <em>Pacific Drive<\/em>, a sort of mobile base or suit of armor on wheels that you will constantly need to patch up, fix, and upgrade. It\u2019s a real character, and by the end you\u2019ll be more attached to it than any other car in video games. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mG8TqF\"><strong>Ratchet &amp; Clank: Rift Apart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-14.jpg\" alt=\"The new Lombax character from Ratchet &amp; Clank: Rift Apart\" title=\"The new Lombax character from Ratchet &amp; Clank: Rift Apart\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Insomniac Games\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank: Rift Apart<\/em> is that next-gen title that awes you the entire way through. It looks stunning, the controller plays a big role in the gameplay, and the amount of bolts and particles on screen at any given time can be jaw-dropping.<\/p>\n<p>But as expensive as <em>Rift Apart<\/em> looks, it\u2019s also just a great Ratchet &amp; Clank game. <em>Rift Apart <\/em>takes classic Ratchet &amp; Clank ideas and modernizes them. The series\u2019 famous wacky weapons have unique alternate fire modes, activated by how hard you pull down the trigger. And the typical collect-a-thon aspects get a refresh thanks to the exciting Rift system and a detailed map.<\/p>\n<p>But the latest Ratchet also tells a story that changes its world forever, adding Rivet and Kit as another powerful duo in its ever-expanding cast of characters. If you\u2019ve spent years playing Ratchet games, <em>Rift Apart<\/em> likely won\u2019t surprise you outside of its visuals. But if you\u2019ve missed the series, or haven\u2019t played them in years, <em>Rift Apart<\/em> is a great reminder of why the Lombax and his robot pal have stuck around for 19 years. \u2014<em>Ryan Gilliam<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"uDXRKU\"><strong>Resident Evil 4 Remake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-15.jpg\" alt=\"Angry villagers wielding axes and other farm implements approach in Resident Evil 4\" title=\"Angry villagers wielding axes and other farm implements approach in Resident Evil 4\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Capcom\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Capcom\u2019s 2005 classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23660168\/resident-evil-4-remake-the-last-of-us-pc-hbo\"><em>Resident Evil 4<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>is pretty much unimpeachable. It\u2019s one of the all-time great horror games, with perfect pacing that breaks up full-bore action with creeping dread, controls and camera that induce tension whilst keeping the game fluid and instinctive to play, and a classically Resident Evil tone that\u2019s pitched somewhere between dead serious and mildly camp.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also no arguing with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23643823\/resident-evil-4-remake-review-capcom-ps5\">2023 remake<\/a>, which lavishly overhauls the gory, gritty visuals whilst updating the game just enough to feel contemporary and slick, but not so much that it loses its essential character. Back in 2005, this game was a high-stakes reinvention for the Resident Evil series. Now, it\u2019s the standard by which these games are judged \u2014 and still a hard-charging joy to play. <em>\u2014OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"xa8E7n\"><strong>Returnal<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-16.jpg\" alt=\"Selene looks downcast in Returnal\" title=\"Selene looks downcast in Returnal\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Housemarque via Polygon\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Returnal<\/em> was the first PS5 game, outside of the free&nbsp;<em>Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/em>, that really took advantage of what the new DualSense controller could do. To test the limits of the controller\u2019s feedback, Housemarque took its refined arcade shooter craft and planted it in a third-person roguelite. The result is a game that demands precision \u2014 precision that your fancy new controller helps afford with its haptic triggers and immersive rumble.<\/p>\n<p><em>Returnal<\/em>\u2019s controller feedback is, outside of some stunning visuals, its most iconic feature. And because of some of the game\u2019s downfalls, like its uneven repetition and imbalanced Parasite system, it\u2019s perhaps doomed to be remembered mainly as a great showcase&nbsp;game for the PlayStation 5. But <em>Returnal<\/em> is still a game every PlayStation 5 owner should pick up and play, if only to feel every bit of that $500 rumble in your fingers. \u2014<em>Ryan Gilliam<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/22408761\/returnal-review-ps5-housemarque\">Read our full review<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mNmIBW\"><strong>Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-17.jpg\" alt=\"Venom roars monstrously on a rainy night street in New York City in Spider-Man 2\" title=\"Venom roars monstrously on a rainy night street in New York City in Spider-Man 2\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Insomniac Games\/Sony Interactive Entertainment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The word for <em>Spider-Man 2<\/em> is confidence: This is an astonishingly slick, enjoyable, and just very <em>together<\/em> superhero adventure that even has the ambition to take some big storytelling risks as it puts its own spin on Spider-Man lore. It pays off in perhaps the most accessible and glossily entertaining PS5 game to date.<\/p>\n<p>At its core, this is an iteration on \u2014 and combination of \u2014 what worked in the first <em>Spider-Man<\/em> and <em>Miles Morales<\/em>, getting great mileage from bringing the two heroes together. You have the same peerless web-swinging traversal system and fluid combat combined with a more bustling city and a much more upbeat and socially conscious (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23924286\/spider-man-2-ps5-police-cops-firefighters\">and less cop-centric<\/a>) attitude. As it\u2019s a PS5 exclusive this time, there are impressive new tech flourishes too, like the lightning-quick fast travel and the ray-traced reflections on all those glass skyscrapers.<\/p>\n<p>But what really makes <em>Spider-Man 2<\/em> come out swinging is Insomniac\u2019s greater confidence as a storyteller, taking on perhaps the ultimate Spider-Man storyline \u2014 the advent of the symbiotes and Venom \u2014 and twisting it into an even more potent form, staging some unforgettable set-pieces along the way. \u2014<em>OW<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"xs2ZHH\"><strong>Street Fighter 6<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-18.jpg\" alt=\"Splash paint effects in bright neon colors surround two fighters in Street Fighter 6\" title=\"Splash paint effects in bright neon colors surround two fighters in Street Fighter 6\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Capcom\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s so much to love about Capcom\u2019s textbook revival of its fighting game champion: the deep, rewarding combat system, the plethora of ways to play, the series-best lineup of old and new characters, and the gloriously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23707906\/street-fighter-6-sf6-roster-hands-on-pc-xbox-ps5-steam\">extravagant, pugnacious, and characterful design and animation<\/a> that brings it all to vivid life. It\u2019s absolutely a new high water mark in fighting games \u2014 but the best part of it is that it\u2019s also a revolution in accessibility for the genre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23739302\/street-fighter-6-review-release-date-characters-ps5-xbox-pc\"><em>Street Fighter 6<\/em><\/a> introduces a number of important innovations aimed at opening up this sometimes intimidating competitive gaming space. There\u2019s the World Tour campaign that patiently teaches you the fundamentals as you level up a custom fighter. And there are also new control schemes \u2014 the streamlined Modern setup and the assisted button-mashing Dynamic mode \u2014 designed to welcome players of every skill and experience level into the fray. As much of a blast as a casual party game as it is in ranked online play, <em>Street Fighter 6<\/em> is the first fighting game in a very, very long time that can claim to be for everyone. <em>\u2014Oli Welsh<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tetris Effect: Connected<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/the-25-best-playstation-5-games-6.png\" alt=\"Tetris Effect gameplay, with sparkling effects surrounding an amber glowing playfield\" title=\"Tetris Effect gameplay, with sparkling effects surrounding an amber glowing playfield\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Tetris Effect<\/em> is the greatest puzzle game of all time \u2014 perhaps the greatest game of all time, period \u2014 as reimagined by Sega\u2019s former trance-master-in-chief Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the author of such minimalist trips as <em>Rez<\/em> and <em>Lumines<\/em>. On paper, <em>Tetris Effect<\/em> is very close to the latter, a puzzle game that yokes the block-matching action to a metronomic techno beat. In spirit, though, it\u2019s more like the former: an almost spiritual, transcendental audiovisual experience that sweeps the player into a higher state of mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s daring to make such a dazzling, enveloping experience out of such a visually simple game. But then again, if Mizuguchi\u2019s aim is to induce a flow state in the player, he could scarcely choose a better vehicle than <em>Tetris<\/em>. Alexey Pajitnov\u2019s design is so simple and satisfying that it operates on an almost subconscious level, and almost 40 years on, its global familiarity has become a virtue that dovetails nicely with Mizguchi\u2019s themes of universality and hope.
