Getting to play as morally gray characters \u2014&nbsp;smugglers like Han Solo or bounty hunters like Boba Fett \u2014 is much more rare, especially in recent decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It hasn\u2019t been for lack of trying on developers\u2019 part; multiple Star Wars games have attempted and spectacularly failed to send players to the darker corners of Star Wars\u2019 lore. But <em>Outlaws<\/em> looks to finally let players play in the muck, figuratively speaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There has been at least one game that nominally fits the bill: the middling, Jango Fett-starring <em>Star Wars: Bounty Hunter<\/em>, a tie-in game launched months after <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22875571\/attack-of-the-clones-star-wars-obi-wan-2022\">Episode II &#8211; Attack of the Clones<\/a><\/em> hit movie theaters. <em>Bounty Hunter<\/em> was a rote third-person action game of the GameCube and PS2 era that presented the Star Wars underworld through the lens of the prequel era \u2014\u00a0not the grimier, run-down, Empire-oppressed timeframe of Star Wars\u2019 most memorable and beloved trilogy of films.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Why has it been so hard to explore this niche of the Star Wars universe? Turns out it\u2019s been nothing personal \u2014 it\u2019s been strictly business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">About 10 years after <em>Star Wars: Bounty Hunter<\/em>, developer LucasArts revealed a promising new action-adventure game in a similar vein. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/2012\/6\/5\/3066449\/star-wars-1313-the-game-that-will-bring-lucasfilm-together\"><em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em> was unveiled at E3 2012<\/a> as a third-person shooter that was planned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2013\/9\/25\/4770682\/star-wars-1313-story-boba-fett-concept-art\">star the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"Star Wars: 1313 - E3 Demo Full Gameplay [HD]\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J_1_Nvn7DPM?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em> dazzled those who saw early demos of it. It was clearly inspired by PlayStation\u2019s Uncharted series, with its mix of exploration, cover-based gunplay, and traversal. <em>1313<\/em> had an elaborate cinematic presentation, and based on its impressive visuals, many assumed at the time it was being built with the next generation of consoles in mind \u2014 the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But after an impressive debut showing, and an obligatory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/2012\/8\/14\/3243734\/lucas-arts-shows-off-star-wars-1313-trailer\">follow-up appearance at Gamescom 2012<\/a>, LucasArts went dark on <em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em>. The game was officially canceled in 2013, in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2012\/10\/30\/3577710\/disney-purchases-lucasfilm-in-4-billion-acquisition-deal-includes\">Disney buying Lucasfilm<\/a> and the Star Wars franchise, and the company choosing to let outside studios make Star Wars games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em> was at one point conceived to tie into another scrapped Star Wars project: <em>Star Wars: Underworld<\/em>, a live-action television series set in the world of galactic gangsters, bounty hunters, and spacefaring scoundrels. There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22904417\/star-wars-1313-boba-fett-gameplay-video\">footage of both <em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_tpTOwXVu8g\"><em>Underworld<\/em><\/a> out there, offering some insight into what could have been.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">After LucasArts tried to make its take on Uncharted-meets-Star Wars, another developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2015\/6\/29\/8861325\/visceral-star-wars-game-uncharted-style-nolan-north\">tried something similar<\/a>. In 2014, former Uncharted series game director Amy Hennig kicked off a project at EA\u2019s Visceral Games studio that would be a \u201cstory-based, linear adventure\u201d in the Star Wars universe. The project stagnated and evolved over time, transforming into an open-world-style adventure in which players would switch between multiple \u201cspace scoundrels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Codenamed Project Ragtag, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/e3\/2016\/6\/12\/11912304\/star-wars-electronic-arts-e3-2016\">Visceral\u2019s Star Wars game was teased briefly<\/a> in 2016 with \u201cearly in-game footage\u201d that showed a man walking through the streets of Tatooine while Imperial ships hovered overhead. Like <em>Star Wars: 1313<\/em>, the project suffered a terrible fate: EA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2017\/10\/17\/16490960\/ea-closing-visceral-games-star-wars-game-delayed\">shut down the studio making it and handed off Project Ragtag<\/a> to another team. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2018\/6\/28\/17515014\/amy-henning-ea-star-wars-update\">Hennig quit EA<\/a> shortly after.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/star-wars-outlaws-might-fulfill-the-promise-of-multiple-star-wars-failures-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/1\/16\/18185131\/ea-star-wars-canceled-visceral-vancouver\">EA finally canceled the project<\/a>. Ragtag had been in development in various forms for six years, and the game\u2019s cancellation indicated a disturbing lack of faith in story-based, single-player Star Wars games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Hennig has since gotten back into the Star Wars video game business. Her studio Skydance New Media&nbsp;is working on a \u201crichly cinematic action-adventure game featuring an original story\u201d set in the Star Wars universe. (Skydance just has to finish its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24106916\/marvel-1943-rise-of-hydra-captain-america-black-panther-game\">World War II video game for Marvel<\/a> first.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In 2021, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment announced they\u2019d be taking another stab at an open-world, story-driven Star Wars game. At the time, Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, called the announcement \u201cthe beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That project would ultimately be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23755742\/star-wars-outlaws-game-massive-ubisoft-xbox-showcase\">revealed as <em>Star Wars Outlaws<\/em> in 2023<\/a>. It promises that players would get to experience the rougher side of Star Wars as smuggler Kay Vess. She\u2019ll interact with cartels, Imperial officers, bounty hunters, and other smugglers in the open-world game that will span multiple planets and space routes in the Star Wars galaxy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Star Wars Outlaws<\/em> appears to exist in spaces that other Star Wars games don\u2019t, borrowing ideas from Ubisoft\u2019s open-world games and the Grand Theft Auto series. Your compatriots in <em>Outlaws<\/em> are thieves, spies, and members of criminal syndicates. It\u2019s not all dark and dirty, though; Vess has a comic-relief-programmed droid sidekick and an adorably furry alien pet to help make her more marketable than the grimiest characters we\u2019ve come to know in the Star Wars underworld.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Hopefully, <em>Star Wars Outlaws<\/em> will pay off on its promises, and continue the recent trend of the best Star Wars stories focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/star-wars\/2019\/12\/31\/21039526\/mandalorian-season-1-episodes-best-worst-ranked\">bounty hunters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/star-wars\/23475574\/andor-luthen-stellan-skarsgard-finale-star-wars-character\">cold-blooded killers<\/a>, instead of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/star-wars\/24171289\/star-wars-sith-boring\">incredibly boring Jedi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/star-wars\/443422\/star-wars-outlaws-underworld-video-games\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Star Wars Outlaws feels like the payoff to more than a decade\u2019s worth of promises for Star Wars video games: the opportunity to rub elbows with scum and villainy, to flex your scoundrel side, and to live as part of the galaxy\u2019s underworld.
