It\u2019s an action RPG soulslike that has a lot of the genre\u2019s usual beats \u2014 XP and skill tree, checkpoints that save your progress while also respawning enemies \u2014 while also putting its own unique spin on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Our <em>Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> beginner\u2019s guide will help you start your journey (to the West) as the Destined One with tips from our first 15 hours with the game. We\u2019ve got hints and advice on level layouts, the (confusing) crafting mechanic, fast travel, and your equipment.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your progress is linear<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/black-myth-wukong-beginners-tips-before-starting.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;em&gt;Black Myth: Wukong&lt;\/em&gt;\u2019s Destined One at a shrine\" title=\"&lt;em&gt;Black Myth: Wukong&lt;\/em&gt;\u2019s Destined One at a shrine\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Game Science via Polygon\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There\u2019s not really a gameplay loop in <em>Black Myth: Wukong<\/em>. You\u2019ll travel from shrine checkpoint to shrine checkpoint, dispatching enemy yaoguais (demons) along the way, but there\u2019s not much of a grind. Instead, you\u2019ll be more focused on getting from one boss fight to the next \u2014 there are a <em>lot<\/em> of bosses and boss-like enemies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That linearity shows up in your armor and weapons as well. You don\u2019t so much unlock them as you just reach a certain shrine and the crafting recipes for new equipment will be automatically unlocked (more on this below). The same goes for spells \u2014 they are just given to you after beating certain bosses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That said, you don\u2019t want to just sprint from one shrine to the next because\u2026<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You should watch for side paths<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While your overall progress is quite linear, the routes between the shrine checkpoints do have branching paths that are almost always worth exploring. You\u2019ll usually find at least a chest or even an optional boss fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Those boss fights will also give you plenty of XP and usually some rare upgrade materials as well. If nothing else, you\u2019ll find some ingredients. Which will be useful\u2026 eventually.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can\u2019t make medicine until chapter 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As you play through the beginning of the game, you\u2019ll find a lot of ingredients like plants and mushrooms. Their descriptions will even say they \u201ccan be used to make medicines,\u201d but you won\u2019t be able to do anything with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">And that\u2019s because that\u2019s a mechanic that doesn\u2019t unlock until chapter 2, several hours into the game.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Embrace running away<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Very early in <em>Black Myth: Wukong<\/em>, you\u2019ll run into an enemy called a Wandering Wight. The first time you meet it, you can\u2019t beat it. (Well, it\u2019s <em>possible<\/em>, but it\u2019s not going to happen.) The trick with that fight, though, is that the way forward is past that enemy. You just have to run past it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/black-myth-wukong-beginners-tips-before-starting-1.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;em&gt;Black Myth: Wukong&lt;\/em&gt; Wandering Wight enemy\" title=\"&lt;em&gt;Black Myth: Wukong&lt;\/em&gt; Wandering Wight enemy\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Game Science via Polygon\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That\u2019s not going to work for most fights, but it\u2019s an important lesson about how the game works \u2014 you\u2019ll get a lot more powerful and have more skills to draw from as you progress (linearly).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If you hit a hard enemy or boss, you can always come back later once you\u2019re a bit stronger. Which brings us to\u2026<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fast travel is weird with no map<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">You can (fast) travel from any shrine to any other shrine you\u2019ve previously visited. But there\u2019s no map, so it\u2019s a little awkward at first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">When you choose to travel, you\u2019ll just get a list of the names of shrines and their region. The names are descriptive enough, though, so it\u2019s not too hard to figure out where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clothes make the Monkey<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As you progress through <em>Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> and defeat bosses, you\u2019ll unlock new equipment to craft at shrines. You\u2019ll only ever fight with one weapon \u2014 various versions of a staff \u2014 so those are easy enough to understand. These include things like damage bonuses or speed increases. Some equipment has a number next to the unique effect \u2014 that indicates how many pieces of that set of gear you need to be wearing to activate the unique effect.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There are secrets (that grant rewards)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While <em>Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> is mostly linear, you\u2019ll find various secrets off the beaten path.
