Ahead of Black Myth: Wukong<\/em>\u2019s Aug. 20 release date, publisher Hero Games (acting on behalf of developer Game Science) reportedly sent a strange directive to several video game streamers who received early codes for the game: Don\u2019t talk about anything that \u201cinstigates negative discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several organizations, including gaming content agency GLHF<\/a> and Forbes<\/a>, confirmed that Hero Games did indeed send out a document of \u201cDo\u2019s & Don\u2019ts\u201d <\/em>that was shared on BlueSky<\/a> by French content creator and writer Benoit \u201cExServ\u201d Reinier. <\/p>\n

GLHF confirmed that at least two streamers were sent the \u201cDo\u2019s & Don\u2019ts\u201d list, which has been published in full online<\/a>. The guidelines say the streamers can\u2019t \u201cinsult other influencers or players,\u201d \u201cuse any offensive language\/humor,\u201d \u201cinclude politics, violence, nudity, feminist propaganda, fetishization, and other content that instigates negative discourse,\u201d \u201cuse trigger words such as \u2018quarantine\u2019 or \u2018isolation\u2019 or \u2018COVID-19,\u2019\u201d or \u201cdiscuss content related to China’s game industry policies, opinions, news, etc.\u201d Polygon has reached out to Game Science and Hero Games for comment.<\/p>\n

Restrictions are common when receiving early review codes for video games. There are embargo agreements, which dictate the time at which an outlet or creator can release information about the game; Polygon agreed to a review embargo<\/a> for Black Myth: Wukong<\/em>, which included an OK\u2019d publish time. Embargo agreements that critics and journalists sign do not include restrictions on opinions about the content or information outside of the game itself, although there are sometimes guidelines or requirements that prevent outlets from spoiling the game in its entirety before it\u2019s released to players \u2014 Polygon\u2019s agreement for Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> restricted the writer from sharing \u201ctoo many details about the game\u2019s plot outside of a couple chapters,\u201d for instance, according to the review writer. That\u2019s where Hero Games\u2019 review guidelines for creators like Reinier diverge from the industry norm.<\/p>\n

Given the content of the game, Hero Games\u2019 guidance that these creators shouldn\u2019t discuss violence is befuddling: Toward the end of the release date trailer<\/a>, a character who appears to be half person, half crab crushes a human\u2019s skull within its hands.<\/p>\n

The notice to avoid discussing the Chinese video game industry may refer to how restrictive the Chinese government can be regarding games in the country. China\u2019s National Press and Publication Administration oversees what gets published in China and what doesn\u2019t, and it issues rules regarding gaming time limits and spending. According to The New York Times, the agency seemingly \u201cbackpedaled\u201d from a highly restrictive plan that would have further limited video game spending<\/a> because the proposal \u201ctanked video gaming companies\u2019 stocks and raised doubts about the government\u2019s commitment to reviving China\u2019s slowing economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The restriction of \u201cfeminist propaganda\u201d may be related to an IGN report from 2023 in which the outlet investigated alleged sexism at Game Science and within the Chinese gaming community<\/a>. For the story, IGN spoke to \u201cseveral women familiar with gaming culture, as well as the games and technology industry, in China\u201d who reported \u201cmisogynistic remarks\u201d from developers at Game Science, including co-founder Feng Ji. Game Science hasn\u2019t publicly responded to the claims in writing, or to journalists at preview events<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Outside of the strange restrictions around coverage, Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> has been reviewing quite well: Polygon called the game \u201cboth confounding and spectacular to behold.\u201d<\/a> On gaming review aggregator Metacritic, Black Myth: Wukong<\/em> has an early score of 81<\/a>, which is considered \u201cgenerally favorable.\u201d <\/p>\n

But no matter how many good reviews\u00a0Black Myth: Wukong\u00a0<\/em>gets, controversy still seems to surround every step of the game’s journey.<\/p>\n
