Trump, confirmed for <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y0kdyvu2Gq\">Semafor<\/a> that once upon a time ago he played <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/mtg-magic-the-gathering\/24218600\/dungeons-and-dragons-astarion-secret-lair-where-to-buy\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/mtg-magic-the-gathering\/24218600\/dungeons-and-dragons-astarion-secret-lair-where-to-buy\">Magic: The Gathering<\/a><\/em>. He also revealed his favorite deck: a fairly powerful construction named \u201cYawgmoth\u2019s Bargain.\u201d But what Vance didn\u2019t mention \u2014 or perhaps was not aware of \u2014 is that the card that gave the deck its name, an enchantment also called <a href=\"https:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=383157\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=383157\">Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain<\/a>, has been banned from most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23643684\/magic-gathering-oathbreaker-format-announced\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23643684\/magic-gathering-oathbreaker-format-announced\"><em>Magic<\/em> formats<\/a> of competitive and casual play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">So why was JD Vance\u2019s favorite <em>Magic <\/em>card consigned to the dustbin of history? Because it sucks. Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/jd-vances-favorite-magic-the-gathering-card-was-banned-for-good-reason-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain, as stated above, is an enchantment \u2014 and a fairly pricey one, at that. It costs the caster a total of six mana, including two black and four of any other color they happen to have on hand. While there are ways around that restriction, the high cost generally means this card won\u2019t see the table until a match is already well underway, once players have built up enough resources to cast it. Once in play, however, it offers the caster an incredibly powerful ability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cSkip your draw step,\u201d reads the card, meaning that the caster can no longer take a new card from the top of their draw pile at the start of each round. Instead, they\u2019re given a new power: \u201cPay 1 life: Draw a card.\u201d It\u2019s a gamble with the players\u2019 own life force, one that asks them to harm themselves in the pursuit of power. And, like all bad <em>Magic<\/em> cards, it\u2019s nearly impossible to counter as it\u2019s played.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In a game of <em>Magic<\/em>, each player starts with 20 life, and the winner is the player who can reduce their opponent to zero. So that means once you\u2019ve played Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain at the table, you can potentially draw up to 19 cards, play all of them, and never once relinquish your turn to the other player.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In layperson\u2019s terms, playing the card means you get up to 19 turns before your opponent gets to take even one. Basically, having Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain played against you feels like getting sucker-punched in a fight, knocked clean out by a velvet hammer before you had the chance to even mount a defense. It clearly seemed like a good idea at the time, otherwise the developers wouldn\u2019t have made the card in the first place. But once it got out into the wild, Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain was such a bummer, with such a bad reputation in the player community, that the same people who made the card and sold it for cash <em>also <\/em>changed the rules of their own game so that the card can never be played again. That\u2019s how bad Vance\u2019s favorite card was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Of course, Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain isn\u2019t the only <em>Magic<\/em> card <a href=\"https:\/\/magic.wizards.com\/en\/banned-restricted-list\">banned over the years<\/a>, but it is among the most hated by the community for reasons which, by now, should be obvious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s unclear whether or not Vance was still playing <em>Magic<\/em> at the time the card was banned. That\u2019s because, he says, he walked away from the world\u2019s most popular trading card game around the same time Yawgmoth\u2019s Bargain came out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThe big problem with [&#8230;] being a [15-year-old] who likes <em>Magic: The Gathering<\/em>,\u201d Vance told Semafor, \u201cis that 15-year-old girls do not like <em>Magic: The Gathering<\/em>. [&#8230;] So I dropped it like a bad habit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Unlike Vance, there are plenty of fans of <em>Magic: The Gathering<\/em>, of every gender, who stuck with it. The game remains the bestselling trading card game in the world, a multibillion-dollar titan that has powered its owner Hasbro through a precipitous decline in the retail toy industry.
