Despite the concerns of Joshua Wolens, it also looks well on its way to becoming a bonafide box office bomb, earning just <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/the-borderlands-movie-squeaks-in-at-8-8-million-over-its-us-box-office-weekend-which-is-about-6-of-what-it-cost-to-market-distribute-and-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>$8.8 million<\/u><\/a> over its opening weekend in the US ($16.5 million globally), which is not great for a film that cost around $150 million to make.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to take anything good from that outcome, but Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has found an upside.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1055px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:38.10%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"j6bUMohmm6eNXh7xRJ2tqW\" name=\"randy1\" alt=\"So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done. We&#8217;re working extra hard four you on what&#8217;s next.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(I assume that &#8220;four&#8221; is not a misspelling but rather a bit of wordplay teasing the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/gearbox-ceo-randy-pitchford-says-he-hasn-t-done-a-good-enough-job-of-hiding-the-studio-s-next-project-immediately-pretty-much-confirms-it-s-borderlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>all-but-confirmed Borderlands 4<\/u><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>He repeated the sentiment in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DuvalMagic\/status\/1822401790979293246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>reply-tweet<\/u><\/a> a little later: &#8220;I&#8217;m actually pretty fucking flattered that people are essentially saying that my team and I are doing a better job building characters and telling stories and making entertainment than this un-fucking-believable cast and crew of some of the biggest and best film makers on the planet. I enjoyed it and am super glad that it exists. I don\u2019t know if I agree with \u201cnothing close to the games\u201d depending on what you mean by that. If you\u2019re saying that my friends and I have done a better job with the games than this unbelievable cast and crew of film makers did with the movie, I am very flattered and am happy to live in that world :) I am close to it. It seems about half the people who actually see the movie seem to like it. And half the people who see it don\u2019t like it. That\u2019s cool. All opinions are valid. The Beatles had more #1 hits than any other band in history and their hit rate was less than 25%. That\u2019s how it is with entertainment. Film and games are very different forms of media, and what works for one isn&#8217;t necessarily going to translate well to the other. The plethora of bad game-based movies is ample evidence of that: A paper-thin excuse to mindlessly blow shit up can work very well for a videogame (see: Borderlands), but it&#8217;s probably not going to hold up for a couple hours on the big screen (see: Borderlands).<\/p>\n<p>Now, does Pitchford&#8217;s statement hold water as a defense of the Borderlands movie? Absolutely not. Director Eli Roth said he was inspired to make the film by watching his dog take a dump (nope, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/1617059\/borderlands-movie-claptrap-pooping-bullets-eli-roth-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>not making that up<\/u><\/a>) and I think the results aptly reflect the truth of that tale. It&#8217;s just a straight-up shitty movie, and there are probably lots of things that people like better: Watching a dog drop a healthy three-coiler on the neighbor&#8217;s lawn, for instance.<\/p>\n<p>Pitchford rejected suggestions that an R rating, which is more typical of Roth&#8217;s work, rather than the PG-13 the film ultimately got, would&#8217;ve made any difference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love some gore in the games\u2014I actively work on that!&#8221; he <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DuvalMagic\/status\/1822390515003695275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>tweeted<\/u><\/a>. &#8220;But I cannot figure out what mind needs that in order to parse a story as &#8216;good&#8217; as if it\u2019s not possible to be &#8216;good&#8217; unless there\u2019s a dick or an organ coming out of a body from violence or a bunch of &#8216;fucks&#8217; uttered. I think, over all, the decisions were correct given what they had to work with. But it\u2019s interesting to note that there was intention in the script and with what was shot to do what your instincts suggested would\u2019ve been nice to have. Probably not. Echoing comments made by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/movies-tv\/take-two-ceo-strauss-zelnick-is-still-holding-out-hope-for-the-borderlands-movie-let-s-give-the-film-a-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>last week<\/u><\/a>, Pitchford said any financial losses on the film would be incurred by the movie studio, not Gearbox: &#8220;So I\u2019m not really affected by that, except that if the studio loses money it may not want to make another movie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dare to dream and all that, but given the inevitability of second-weekend ticket sales dropoff, I&#8217;d guess the odds of Borderlands 2 are not great.
