A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/palworld-becomes-second-game-in-steam-history-to-hit-more-than-2-million-concurrent-players\/\">rip-roaring 2 million concurrent players<\/a> has simmered down to a humble-but-hearty 30,000 on average, with a recent leap to 90,000 at the time of writing owing to its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/palworlds-newest-major-update-sakurajima-adds-tons-of-new-pals-and-buildings-but-you-wont-be-able-to-kidnap-tower-bosses-anymore\/\">recent major update<\/a>. A continued success by any metric.<\/p>\n<p>Still, part of that initial hullabaloo involved anger over Palworld&#8217;s pals\u2014who were, if you listened to the peanut gallery, either <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/survival-crafting\/nearly-6-months-later-palworld-devs-confirm-nintendo-never-drew-so-much-as-an-inch-of-its-legal-sword-over-bootleg-pokemon-allegations\/\">direct rip-offs of Pok\u00e9mon<\/a> or AI-generated slop. As I mentioned back in January, though, these were mostly based on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/ai-palworld-accusations-are-currently-based-on-vibes-a-social-deduction-game-and-the-ceos-past-tweets-about-machine-generated-fakemon\/\">sheer vibes<\/a> and Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe being <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/urokuta_ja\/status\/1470995753627951104\">really excited about AI pokemon<\/a> back in 2021 (which, in fairness, is pretty suspicious\u2014but raised eyebrows aren&#8217;t evidence).<\/p>\n<p>As you might have noticed, though, it&#8217;s 2024 now\u2014and Mizobe seems to have a dimmer attitude towards the tech writ large, as hinted by a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/urokuta_ja\/status\/1810877632768266426\">recent tweet<\/a> (translated and spotted by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/palworld-does-not-use-generative-ai-pocketpair-ceo-assures\/\">Automaton<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Palworld is often accused of using generative AI, but in reality, we do not use it. Our artists draw thousands of sketches. That&#8217;s definitely concept art.<\/p>\n<p>I was always of the mind that, while it certainly mattered if Palworld used AI or not (in the same way that it matters to verify whether your mate nicked the Mona Lisa), there wasn&#8217;t much in the way of proof. The sentence &#8216;was this made by AI?&#8217; when pointing at something that is merely <em>bad<\/em> is a genuine source of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/2023s-rise-of-ai-doesnt-just-risk-making-games-worse-it-turns-criticising-them-into-an-existential-nightmare\/\">existential dread<\/a> for me, especially as someone who liked to critique stuff even before I started writing for PC Gamer.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, sometimes the curtains are just blue\u2014and sometimes a human concept artist just looked at Mega Mewtwo Y and said <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/palworld-player-uncovers-secret-mewtwo-like-hidden-in-the-game-files-that-looks-too-legally-actionable-even-for-palworld\/\">&#8220;yeah, I bet if I just change a few things, that&#8217;ll be fine&#8221;<\/a>. All art is derivative, sometimes <em>very <\/em>derivative, and it&#8217;s fair to criticise that when it goes too far. But muddying the pool based on a gut feeling is only going to make it harder to spot genuinely crummy uses of the tech.
