At the moment, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/steamdb.info\/app\/315210\/charts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SteamDB<\/a> indicates that 161 people are currently playing the game on Steam, and while that isn&apos;t the whole picture\u2014Suicide Squad is also available on Xbox and PlayStation\u2014it&apos;s sure not a sign of good things happening.<\/p>\n<p>The persistently near-subterranean player counts has led to worries that WB Games might <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/redfalls-devs-were-reportedly-building-out-its-massively-delayed-hero-pass-content-very-recentlybefore-microsoft-closed-arkane-austin-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do a Redfall<\/a> and pull the plug on planned future updates\u2014although hopefully without pulling the plug on the entire development studio in the process. From a business perspective, it&apos;s not an unreasonable suggestion: Why put however much money a full year of content takes to create (presumably a lot) for the benefit of a few hundred (or even a few thousand) diehards?<\/p>\n<p>But that is apparently the plan: A WB Games representative has confirmed with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/suicide-squad-season-2-release-date-roadmap-freeze-1851529893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kotaku<\/a> that &#8220;Suicide Squad will complete its currently announced roadmap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That roadmap includes three more post-launch seasons (the first season, featuring The Joker, is already live) with three new playable characters, three new environments, and various weapons, gear sets, activities, and other content between them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:3420px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:63.16%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"AJkAcpMqL2PcbftpFsgYnM\" name=\"GEdz44Za4AAiPZ3.jpg\" alt=\"Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League year one roadmap\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/wb-games-promises-suicide-squad-will-complete-its-currently-announced-roadmap.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"1\" width=\"3420\" height=\"2160\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"expandable\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Rocksteady Studios)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That&apos;s good news for the people playing Suicide Squad, but it doesn&apos;t exactly ooze enthusiasm for the future, or even suggest that one is possible. It&apos;s more akin to a begrudging acknowledgement that promises made will be promises kept. Which I suppose is more than we get in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>It&apos;s been reported that WB Games took a<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/third-person-shooter\/oof-suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-lost-warner-bros-200-million-which-is-25-million-more-than-the-original-2016-movie-cost-to-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> $200 million loss<\/a> on Suicide Squad, so you can understand why there&apos;d be a reluctance to throw good money after bad. But it&apos;s also (another) spotlight shone on the inherent Achilles heel of live service games: If they aren&apos;t a hit, all those big promises for the future are just ink on paper, and the fact that you spent $60 or more in anticipation of a long, fruitful future really doesn&apos;t mean anything.<\/p>\n<p>As a business executive, you might argue that shutting it all down is the smart move, but as a fan of a game in the firing line, it really sucks: When Sharkmob announced the end of development on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/this-sucks-a-month-after-i-discover-vampire-the-masquerade-bloodhunt-theyre-killing-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vampire: The Masquerade \u2013 Bloodhunt<\/a>\u2014finally, a battle royale I liked!\u2014I was genuinely let down. And, I hate to say, I stopped playing\u2014it&apos;s still a great game, but knowing that the promised story isn&apos;t going to evolve further completely took the wind out of my sails.<\/p>\n<p>So take heart, Suicide Squadders: For the next nine months or so, your game will live on.
