Take-Two <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/sim\/kerbal-space-program-2-developer-intercept-games-may-be-closing-as-part-of-take-twos-big-layoff-plan\/\">axed two studios<\/a> just last week, and now Microsoft has <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/microsoft-announces-4-studio-closuresincluding-arkane-austin-and-tango-gameworks-creators-of-prey-and-hi-fi-rush-respectively\/\">bulldozed four more<\/a>, including Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks, which it acquired when it bought Bethesda in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The dissolution of these talented, well-respected teams has reinforced the feeling among gamers and developers that nothing is good enough to earn security under big publishers today. And in his email to staff today (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/microsoft-closes-redfall-developer-arkane-austin-hifi-rush-developer-tango-gameworks-and-more-in-devastating-cuts-at-bethesda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired by IGN<\/a>), Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said that the studio closures &#8220;are not a reflection of the creativity and skill of the talented individuals at these teams or the risks they took to try new things.&#8221; Rather, Microsoft is &#8220;prioritizing high-impact titles.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The message being heard is that you can do everything right, but still be deemed &apos;low-impact&apos; at any point by the suits upstairs, and then it&apos;s curtains. In the wake of the announcement, fans and developers have expressed fury, heartbreak, and unease, especially over the future of other Microsoft-owned studios, which include Obsidian, inXile, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Extremely cool and not devastating at all how even studios and devs who make award winning or best selling games aren&apos;t safe from \u2728restructuring\u2728 and \u2728divesting resources elsewhere\u2728,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmmaKidwell\/status\/1787847923159478712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Firaxis writer Emma Kidwell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&apos;t understand the closure of Tango Gameworks,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Pilestedt\/status\/1787879205763531106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Helldivers 2 studio CEO Johan Pilestedt. &#8220;I mean&#8230; Why close instead of divest [sell]? Surely the team would easily have been able to find a new home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I cannot imagine hearing you&apos;re being let go because of prioritisation of *another developer* is especially good for morale,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Cromwelp\/status\/1787873210211434819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Larian publishing director Michael Douse, &#8220;especially if you\u2019re in another regional office of a shuttered sister office \ud83e\udd26\u200d\u2642\ufe0f- imaging reading that and working in Obsidian, or something. Alan Wake 2 director Kyle Rowley <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TimePirateNinja\/status\/1787863212806881468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said that<\/a> Remedy &#8220;took a lot of inspiration from both Evil Within and Evil Within 2&#8221; when making Alan Wake 2, and encouraged ex-Tango developers to apply. BioShock creator Ken Levine said that he&apos;s &#8220;sad and disappointed&#8221; by the closure of Arkane Austin, and is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/levine\/status\/1787950428686000374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeking designers from the studio<\/a> to work on his new game (although it bears mentioning that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2014\/3\/6\/5474722\/why-did-irrational-close-bioshock-infinite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Levine&apos;s last studio, Irrational, closed<\/a> so that he could start his current one).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Booty&apos;s email, &#8220;some&#8221; Arkane Austin employees will be moved to other teams at Bethesda. One of the other studios that closed, Roundhouse Games, will be absorbed by ZeniMax Online Studios. Tango Gameworks and the fourth shuttered studio, Alpha Dog, had no such stipulations\u2014they just closed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just want to say that I love all the people at Arkane Austin so much,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Harvey1966\/status\/1787854732398145821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> its former studio director, Harvey Smith. &#8220;Great times, hard times, we went through so much, together. Of course, today&apos;s news is terrible, for all of us.
