It&apos;s certainly been very busy, though, building all kinds of new facilities for making processors, as well as expanding its research laboratories. In a brief report on its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/newsroom\/news\/updates-intel-10-largest-construction-projects.html?cid=em&#038;source=elo&#038;campid=smggmo_WW_gmocoma_EMPR_EN_2024_0415_10ProjectsUpdates_C-MKA-40623_T-MKA-41915&#038;content=smggmo_WW_gmocoma_EMPR_EN_2024_0415_10ProjectsUpdates_C-MKA-40623_T-MKA-41915&#038;elq_cid=8744199&#038;em_id=102680&#038;elqrid=e028064c8e7b4eba94637ae520f693c2&#038;elqcampid=62248&#038;erpm_id=12473893#gs.832rou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 largest construction projects<\/a>, Intel shared that the total cost of all the current investments will be over $160 billion by the time it&apos;s all finished.<\/p>\n<p>If you&apos;re wondering whether that&apos;s a lot of money for such things, then rest assured, it absolutely is. Yes, semiconductor foundries all cost many billions of dollars to design and build, and TSMC has <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pr.tsmc.com\/english\/news\/3122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent in the region of $65 billion<\/a> to construct three chip-making plants in Arizona. However, Intel is also spending a bucket load of cash on improving its research and development facility in Hillsboro, specifically over $36 billion.<\/p>\n<p>To put that into perspective, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/stocks\/charts\/NVDA\/nvidia\/research-development-expenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia spent a little under $9 billion on R&#038;D<\/a> in its last financial year and although the company never goes into much detail as to where that money goes, a large portion of it is almost certainly going into designing its next generation of AI superchips. Nvidia doesn&apos;t make its own chips, though, whereas Intel does\u2014well, most of them, at least, as roughly one-third of all the wafers it needs are produced by TSMC.<\/p>\n<p>Big numbers are the star feature of Intel&apos;s report. For example, the $32 billion investment in building two fabs in Arizona has, so far, resulted in 430,000 cubic yards (around 329,000 cubic metres) of concrete poured into the ground. The days of Intel having a near-total monopoly on the processor market are long gone, as it&apos;s not just AMD that it has to contend with. In the world of AI, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/as-if-it-didnt-dominate-the-ai-market-already-nvidia-is-gearing-up-to-go-after-the-custom-ai-chip-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia dominates that sector<\/a> and Google and Amazon are also investing heavily in the continued development of their chips for machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>Intel has the largest market share when it comes to x86 processors, but with Qualcomm stepping into that sector with its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/2024-could-be-the-year-the-pc-finally-dumps-x86-for-arm-all-thanks-to-windows-12-and-qualcomms-new-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snapdragon X Elite<\/a> and AMD looking to capture a larger share with its next-generation <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/the-launch-of-amds-zen-5-processors-is-close-as-motherboard-manufacturers-begin-rolling-out-bioses-supporting-the-next-gen-chips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zen 5 architecture<\/a>, the 55-year-old chip giant is clearly not expecting to have it all its way in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>What&apos;s that saying? &#8220;You have to spend money to make money&#8221; or something like that.
