Why just drum, when I could <em>speeddrum<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I&apos;m not going to commit my life to mastering Mario 64 with drumsticks, but that&apos;s just one way to put instruments to use in games. While there&apos;s no shortage of videos chronicling <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/02my_zhX4Bs?si=FZ7OqPnOPmdXBlou\">ludicrous challenge runs<\/a> using unorthodox input methods out there, the versatility of MIDI means they&apos;re practical in all sorts of games\u2014but <em>especially<\/em> in rhythm games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the best rhythm games of recent years utilize non-traditional controls, like Project Diva Megamix&apos;s sliders, DJ Max Respect \/ V&apos;s piano keyboard, and Taiko Drum Master&apos;s big plastic taiko drum. While you can use a keyboard and controller, the whole instrument thing is almost totally lost in translation. There are boutique controllers available that emulate that arcade experience\u2014I&apos;ve owned a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dj-dao.com\/en\/divaller\">DiValler<\/a> for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1761390\/Hatsune_Miku_Project_DIVA_Mega_Mix\/\">Project Diva<\/a> in the past, and while it was solidly built and could definitely be used in a couple rhythm games, at $450 it&apos;s as pricey as a full instrument. That there&apos;s a market at all for a controller like the DiValler highlights the gulf between home versions of rhythm games and the bliss of playing them in arcades.<\/p>\n<p>If you&apos;re serious about rhythm games\u2014and I mean perfect scores, no missed notes serious\u2014MIDI translation is one way to close that input gap and connect with the music physically.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-you-apos-ll-need-6\">What you&apos;ll need<\/h2>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"low\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0yWc4spNDx8\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udf9b\ufe0f A USB Compatible MIDI controller\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>The sky is really the limit with this one, but if you&apos;re primarily interested in rhythm games, I would recommend any model of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Professional-Keyboard-Controller-Production-Software\/dp\/B0886ZPWC8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AKAI MPK MINI<\/a>. It has piano keys, pressure sensitive drum pads, and you can probably get one on Facebook Marketplace for under fifty bucks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udcac <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bome.com\/products\/miditranslator\"><strong>Bome MIDI Translator Pro<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211; <\/strong>This is the software we&apos;ll need to translate our MIDI signals into keystrokes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27b0 <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/TENINYU-Synthesizer-Microphone-Instrument-Converter\/dp\/B07L8KFYBK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>USB to MIDI cable<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&apos;ll also need a game to play, obviously. Since I have an electronic drum kit and (mostly) know how to drum, I opted to build a translation profile suited to playing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xbox.com\/en-US\/games\/store\/taiko-no-tatsujin-the-drum-master\/9n4v8k7z5rrg\">Taiko no Tatsujin: The Drum Master!!<\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"configuring-your-virtual-midi-ports-6\">Configuring your Virtual MIDI ports<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Install Bome MIDI Translator Pro<\/li>\n<li>Launch the program, open &#8220;Settings&#8221; and add a new Virtual MIDI Port<\/li>\n<li>Plug in your MIDI input device<\/li>\n<li>Within the MIDI Router menu, drag your device&#8217;s virtual MIDI cable from the left into the Bome MIDI Translator 1 Virtual Out<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"building-a-translation-profile-6\">Building a Translation Profile<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:424px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:23.58%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"GfQCTD8iezgNZKCSTEDgYT\" name=\"Step1Incoming.png\" alt=\"MIDI Guide\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/how-i-turned-my-midi-instruments-into-the-ultimate-rhythm-game-controllers.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"100\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>Under &#8220;Incoming&#8221; on the right sidebar, toggle &#8220;Capture MIDI&#8221;. The drum is sending two signals &#8211; Note On, and Note Off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Some instruments will send a velocity signal instead of a Note on\/off signal. Return to the Capture MIDI menu and press the same drum pad, except this time, we&apos;re going to select &#8220;Note Off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:401px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:22.94%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"qNphdqRDow7eZbiTbyEQnT\" name=\"Screenshot 2024-03-12 221022.png\" alt=\"MIDI Guide\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/how-i-turned-my-midi-instruments-into-the-ultimate-rhythm-game-controllers-5.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"92\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Set velocity to &#8220;any velocity&#8221; again, since that parameter has been reset by selecting the &#8220;Note Off&#8221; pad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> Under &#8220;Outgoing,&#8221; select &#8220;Up&#8221; <em>instead <\/em>of down.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-result-xa0-6\">The result\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>After some fiddling with my pad sensitivity and gate settings, I was able to play Taiko No Tatsujin with controls identical to those in the arcade.
