Developed by Tinybuild Riga, Duckside is a multiplayer survival sim in the style of Rust and DayZ, only everyone plays as a duck.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over 10 million ducks get killed per year by hunters, a statistic that would be much lower if ducks were combat trained,&#8221; states the game&apos;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/2682580\/DUCKSIDE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steam page<\/a>. &#8220;Enter Duckside, a persistent world survival game like DayZ or Rust\u2026 but you\u2019re a duck, and so is everybody else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/duckside-announced-think-dayz-meets-rust-but-you-play-as-a-duck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IGN<\/a>, Duckside is developed by Tinybuild Riga, and aims to offer a familiar blend of resource gathering, tool and weapon crafting, base-building, and open ended combat against human NPCs and other player ducks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the novelty value of its player characters (which, let&apos;s face it, represents 90% of this game&apos;s raison d&apos;etre) the most interesting wrinkle here is that being a duck means that you can fly around the map from the start. Such freedom of movement could add a fresh dynamic to Rust-style survivalism. Granted, you can fly in Rust too, but only after you&apos;ve built a helicopter, which isn&apos;t easy in a game where you start off hitting rocks with a smaller rock.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was accompanied by a trailer, which you can view above, as well as a second video titled &apos;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ke3_D7Kye44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basics of survival<\/a>&apos; that shows off some resource gathering and base construction. Frankly, I&apos;d say &apos;basic&apos; is the operative word here. The flying looks half-decent, but actions like pecking trees and rocks for resources seem rudimentary in their implementation, while the environment is hardly the most eye-catching survival wilderness I&apos;ve seen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:3840px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"KUm4HwFnoXzZCYpp2ZTr64\" name=\"image1.jpg\" alt=\"Duckside\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/new-multiplayer-survival-game-features-crafting-base-building-automatic-weapons-and-flying-the-twist-everyone-plays-as-a-bunch-of-ducks.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"1\" width=\"3840\" height=\"2160\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"expandable\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Tinybuild)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, despite the game having its own Steam page, I&apos;m not wholly convinced this isn&apos;t an extremely elaborate April Fool.\u00a0 Then again, Tinybuild has another game in the works titled <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1496260\/Pigeon_Simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pigeon Simulator<\/a> so making a survival game about ducks isn&apos;t wildly beyond the studio&apos;s remit.<\/p>\n<p>Duckside doesn\u2019t have a release date yet, but you can find out more about the game <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/news\/app\/2682580\/view\/4200243059642752007?l=english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. When it does release, you can be sure it&apos;ll be up against some stiff competition. This year has already been huge for survival games, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/uk\/search\/?searchTerm=palworld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palworld<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/uk\/search\/?searchTerm=enshrouded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enshrouded<\/a> enjoying enormously successful launches, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/uk\/search\/?searchTerm=sons+of+the+forest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sons of the Forest<\/a> sucking the last dregs of marrow from the bone of Steam Early Access. Maybe Duckside has more surprises hidden under its wing. Or maybe Tinybuild will end up facing a hefty bill.
