Two of the country&apos;s leading chip manufacturers and designers are showing signs of struggle, and as the restrictions continue to put the squeeze on China&apos;s chip manufacturing and development sector, it seems that the industry may be feeling the effects.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO and co-founder of Chinese AI GPU manufacturer Biren Technology, Xu Lingjie, has recently resigned (via <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/gpus\/chief-exec-of-chinas-ai-gpu-developer-biren-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom&apos;s Hardware<\/a>), while Cambricon, a leading AI chip developer considered to be a key player within the industry, has been laying off staff since last summer, with its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitimes.com.tw\/tech\/dt\/n\/shwnws.asp?CnlID=1&#038;Cat=40&#038;id=0000684062_N0U1HFGE5HKN3P3727NXO&#038;s=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market value said to have nearly halved<\/a> since it went public in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Cambricon&apos;s issues have been long-standing, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/chinese-companies-added-us-entity-list-2022-12-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company was added<\/a> to the US Commerce Department&apos;s &#8220;entity list&#8221; in December of last year, severely restricting its access to US chip technology and manufacturing equipment, while Biren Technology was added last October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&apos;s not just the AI sector that seems to be in trouble. China&apos;s economy has had a rocky start to the year, with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2024\/01\/23\/china-economy-stock-market-decline-investor-pessimism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stock market slide<\/a> that saw large percentage drops in key financial metrics and the People&apos;s Bank of China announcing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/jan\/24\/china-05-per-cent-cut-bank-minimum-reserves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large cuts<\/a> to how much cash banks hold in reserve, in an attempt to boost lending and help the struggling economy recover.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week the CEO of Intel, Pat Gelsinger, made comments in a conversation at the World Economic Forum in regards to the current technological gap between China and the rest of the world in regards to chip manufacture and design, stating that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/i-think-this-is-a-10-year-gap-intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-says-china-is-majorly-behind-in-chip-manufacturing-thanks-to-export-restrictions-and-looks-to-stay-that-way-for-the-foreseeable-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he believes that there is a &#8220;10-year gap&#8221;<\/a> in relation to the two.
