For example, during the first three quarters of 2023 on Roblox, there were a <\/span>total of <b>165 billion<\/b> avatar updates, up 38% year over year, and people bought nearly <b>1.6 billion<\/b> digital fashion items and accessories, up 15% year over year. Plus, <b>millions<\/b> of Roblox users continue to update their avatars every day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the influence of digital style and fashion doesn\u2019t stay in the virtual world. In the survey, <\/span><b>84% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report that their physical style is at least <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somewhat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inspired by their avatar\u2019s style, including <\/span><b>54%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who say they are <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely inspired<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by what their avatar and other avatars wear.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. In fact, <\/span><b>50%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say they\u2019d be <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely likely<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Each sold within minutes, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roblox.com\/catalog\/14795492108\/Monstercats-1-1-Ruby-Pendant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ruby Pendant<\/b><\/a><b>, <\/b>acquired for <b>1,000,001 Robux <\/b>(approximately<b> $10,000<\/b>), the highest initial Limited sale to date.<\/p>\n<h2><b>4. In addition, numerous brands\u2014like Fenty Beauty, Maybelline, NARS, Givenchy Beauty, NYX, and L\u2019Oreal\u2014are now investing in meeting customers\u2019 interest in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there\u2019s real opportunity for them. According to our survey, <\/span><b>more than a third of all respondents (35%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say it\u2019s important to customize their avatar\u2019s makeup daily or weekly, and the number rises to <\/span><b>51%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for self-identifying female respondents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are also increasingly customizing their avatar hair on Roblox. This year alone, users purchased more than <\/span><b>139 million hairstyles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up 20% over the year before, including more than <\/span><b>7.3 million people who bought five or more hairstyles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Roblox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But self-expression doesn\u2019t end there: Roblox users have increasingly been adopting emotes, and so far this year, <\/span><b>9.8 million Roblox users bought them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up 64% year over year. That\u2019s something that Tommy Hilfiger took note of in introducing emotes into its Roblox digital fashion collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users are also choosing fantastical auras that match their vibe, like a colorful variety available within Paris Hilton\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roblox.com\/games\/14102374323\/LIMITED-UGC-Slivingland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slivingland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And soon, Roblox users will be able to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/2023\/10\/how-roblox-avatar-tech-is-evolving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressive avatars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring realistic emotions. That\u2019s likely to be well-received by Gen Z users since <\/span><b>86%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of survey respondents say it is at least <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somewhat important<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that their avatar is able to express emotions in order to feel fully represented in the metaverse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Authenticity drives self-expression in immersive spaces and positively impacts well-being<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One striking finding from the survey is that most members of Gen Z strive to look good in the metaverse for themselves rather than for others. Among the reasons cited: more \u201cfreedom of expression\u201d and \u201ccreative options.\u201d Further, people feel they \u201ccan be whoever we want\u201d and that it\u2019s \u201cless judgemental\u201d when they interact with others as avatars in immersive spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, our research showed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Twice as many <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents believe they are judged less on their looks in the metaverse than in the physical world, and;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respondents were <\/span><b>2.2 times more likely<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to say that expressing themselves in immersive spaces via their avatar feels better (\u201cmore me\u201d) than posting 2D photos from the physical world on social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, respondents cited a positive impact on their mental well-being:<\/span><b> 88% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say expressing themselves in immersive spaces has<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> likely<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped them comfortably express themselves in the physical world. They note it helps build connections with others <\/span><b>(29%), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boosts confidence <\/span><b>(24%), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allows for true self-expression<\/span><b> (21%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and helps improve mental health in other ways<\/span><b> (25%).<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Universal Connector<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authentic self-expression is often described as a universal connector for people: by sharing who we truly are, we can make genuine connections. As Roblox continues building its platform and products for immersive communication and connection, we\u2019re ensuring that people have the broadest set of opportunities to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/2023\/10\/how-roblox-avatar-tech-is-evolving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authentically express themselves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The sample has been balanced for gender in both markets using the Census Bureau\u2019s American Community Survey for the U.S. and Office for National Statistics in the UK to reflect the demographic composition of these markets\u2019 population in that age range.
