In total, this acquisition will result in roughly 1100 employees from these three studios, across eight locations around the world, becoming Embracer Group employees. This purchase is expected to close during the second year of Embracer\u2019s 2022-23 financial year, or in other words, sometime between July and September of this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameBorder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YD7iezQ1TF8\" width=\"\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome these studios into the Embracer Group,\u201d Embracer Group co-founder and group CEO Lars Wingefors writes in a <a href=\"https:\/\/embracer.com\/release\/embracer-group-enters-into-an-agreement-to-acquire-eidos-crystal-dynamics-and-square-enix-montreal-amongst-other-assets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>. \u201cWe recognize the fantastic IP, world-class creative talent, and track record of excellence that have been demonstrated time and again over the past decades. It has been a great pleasure meeting with leadership teams and discussing future plans for how they can realize their ambitions and become a great part of Embracer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Square Enix America and Europe CEO Phil Rogers writes in the release that Embracer is the best-kept secret in gaming in that it\u2019s a \u201cmassive, decentralized collection of entrepreneurs whom we are thrilled to become a part of today.\u201d He calls Embracer Group the perfect fit for Square Enix America and Europe\u2019s ambitions, which is to \u201cmake high-quality games, with great people, sustainably, and grow our existing franchises to their best versions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since Embracer is acquiring not just Crystal Dynamics, but the Tomb Raider IP as well, it sounds like the next Tomb Raider game, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/04\/05\/crystal-dynamics-announces-new-tomb-raider-game-will-be-powered-by-unreal-engine-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which was announced just a few weeks ago as a title that will be developed completely in Unreal Engine 5<\/a>, will be an Embracer title. As for why Square Enix decided to sell these studios to begin with, which includes the studios behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/marvels-avengers\/marvels-avengers-review-a-powerful-superhero-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy\/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy-review-enthralling-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel\u2019s Guardians of the Galaxy<\/a>, Square Enix cites \u201cadapting to the changes underway in the global business environment\u201d and the rise of blockchain technology, cloud gaming, and artificial intelligence and its own investment in each.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameBorder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I5uYgO2_Brg\" width=\"\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe transaction will assist the company in adapting to the changes underway in the global business environment by establishing a more efficient allocation of resources, which will enhance corporate value by accelerating growth in the company\u2019s core businesses in the digital entertainment domain,\u201d Square Enix writes in its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hd.square-enix.com\/eng\/news\/pdf\/20220502%20A_Press%20Release_fin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>. \u201cIn addition, the transaction enables the launch of new business by moving forward with investments in fields such as blockchain, AI, and the cloud.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reading a bit between the lines, Square Enix has made it clear that it has been&nbsp;less than impressed with its western studio output at times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/11\/03\/marvels-avengers-revealed-to-be-a-disappointment-to-square-enix-in-annual-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling Crystal Dynamcis-developed Marvel\u2019s Avengers a disappointment back in November<\/a> and stating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/02\/22\/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy-undershot-square-enixs-initial-expectations-despite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eidos-Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Marvel\u2019s Guardians of the Galaxy undershot its initial expectations<\/a> despite strong reviews.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, Square Enix says its studios in Japan, Square Enix external studios, and the Square Enix Collective will continue to make games, and the company will continue to \u201cpublish franchises such as Just Cause, Outriders, and Life is Strange.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameBorder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kCmBAVUrqwI\" width=\"\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>After this transaction closes later this year,&nbsp;Embracer Group says the U.S. will be its number one country by number of game developers, with Canada in second place for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn total, post pending closings, Embracer will have more than 14,000 employees, 10,000 engaged game developers, and 124 internal studios,\u201d the release reads. \u201cEmbracer\u2019s upcoming content pipeline includes more than 230 games with more than 30 AAA games. This acquisition will bring additional scale to Embracer\u2019s current AAA segment, and Embracer will have one of the largest pipelines of PC\/Console games content across the industry, across all genres.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company says it believes there will be an increasingly-strong demand for \u201chigh-quality content, including AAA single-player games,\u201d over the next decade and this transaction will help it meet that demand.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameBorder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EK2ZONNH0AY\" width=\"\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Embracer Group\u2019s acquisition joins a lineup of other purchases that have largely defined gaming in 2022 thus far. It started with Take-Two Interactive, the parent company behind the Grand Theft Auto series, announcing back in January that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/10\/take-two-acquires-zynga-for-nearly-13-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it was acquiring mobile giant Zynga for nearly $13 billion<\/a>. Then, a week later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/18\/microsoft-and-xbox-acquire-activision-blizzard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft announced that it was acquiring Activision Blizzard<\/a>, the company behind Overwatch and Call of Duty, for a colossal $68.7 billion, and then two weeks later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/31\/sony-announces-its-acquiring-bungie-for-36-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony revealed it was buying Bungie<\/a> for $3.6 billion. A few weeks later, Sony also announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/03\/21\/playstation-acquires-jade-raymonds-haven-studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it had acquired Jade Raymond\u2019s new studio, Haven Studios<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the uptick in acquisitions happening this year, Embracer Group has been boosting its studio count for years.
