E3 has been completely canceled this year, IGN<\/a><\/em> reports with further confirmation by VentureBeat<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement to VentureBeat<\/em>, the Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, said the following:<\/p>\n

“We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19.\u00a0Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022.”<\/p>\n

The ESA\u00a0announced in January<\/a> that a physical convention would not take place but an online-only version was still a possibility. Today’s news broke when\u00a0IGN<\/em>\u2019s Rebekah Valentine confirmed the contents of an email sent to Razor PR lead\u00a0Will Powers, who tweeted<\/a> that it\u00a0stated a\u00a0digital E3 was no longer happening as well. It appears these emails were sent to all of the ESA\u2019s partners prior to the announcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There has not been an in-person E3 since 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 show was also canceled\u00a0and the 2021 iteration\u00a0was an online event consisting of trailers and digital booths for media. However, many publishers either declined to participate or appeared in\u00a0Geoff Keighley\u2019s Summer Games Fest, making E3 2021 <\/span>a shallow disappointment<\/a> to fans and the press.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s likely due to the 2021 show’s\u00a0reception that the\u00a0ESA also tells VentureBeat<\/em> that it plans to “revitalize”\u00a0E3 in\u00a02023 as “a reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
