That means the studio that created Halo and Destiny is coming under the PlayStation umbrella. Sony\u2019s announcement caps off an acquisition-heavy January that saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/10\/take-two-acquires-zynga-for-nearly-13-billion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take-Two buy Zynga<\/a> for $13 billion and Microsoft announce plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/18\/microsoft-and-xbox-acquire-activision-blizzard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquire Activision Blizzard<\/a> for $68.7 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bungie posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bungie.net\/en\/Explore\/Detail\/News\/50988\">blog post<\/a> discussing the acquisition, saying that it will \u201ccontinue to independently publish and creatively develop our games\u201d and that SIE\u2019s first, most immediate influence will be an acceleration in the studio\u2019s hiring process. Bungie states that it\u2019s staffing up for Destiny 2 as well as \u201call new worlds beyond.\u201d Bungie is currently working on Destiny 2\u2019s upcoming expansion, The Witch Queen, which is slated to launch on February 22. The game\u2019s next big update, Lightfall, is tentatively set for later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie\u2019s heart,\u201d reads an excerpt from the blog post. \u201cLike us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sony president\/CEO\u00a0Jim Ryan wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sie.com\/en\/blog\/bungie-to-join-the-playstation-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> of his own, stating \u201cBungie\u2019s successful track record in multi-format publishing and live game services will assist us in realizing our ambitions to take PlayStation beyond the console and increase our potential audience. They will remain independent and multi-platform, will enjoy creative freedom, and their track record in developing massively successful franchises in the sci-fi shooter genre will be highly complementary to SIE\u2019s own IP portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sony\u2019s purchase is the latest in an arms race of major studio acquisitions in the game industry. In 2021 alone, the publisher bought Demon\u2019s Souls\/Shadow of the Colossus remake masterminds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/09\/30\/sony-has-acquired-demons-souls-remake-studio-bluepoint-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bluepoint Games<\/a>, Returnal developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/06\/29\/sony-acquires-returnal-studio-housemarque-evidence-suggests-bluepoint-also-acquired\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Housemarque<\/a>, fighting game tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/03\/18\/sony-interactive-entertainment-partners-with-esports-venture-rts-to-acquire-evo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EVO<\/a>, veteran support studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/12\/10\/sony-to-acquire-developer-valkyrie-entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valkyrie Entertainment<\/a>, and hinted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/10\/28\/sony-to-aggressively-invest-in-development-capabilities-more-acquisitions-likely-on-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other acquisitions were on the way<\/a>. Whether or not Bungie will be the last big studio on Sony\u2019s shopping list remains to be seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bungie spent most of the\u00a02000s as a Microsoft-owned studio developing the Halo series before going independent in 2007. It would continue making Halo games until the company signed a 10-year publishing agreement with Activision in 2010, which led to the creation of the Destiny franchise. The studio then abruptly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2019\/01\/10\/bungie-splits-with-activision-and-takes-over-destiny-publishing\">split from Activision in 2019<\/a>, going independent once more while retaining full publishing rights to the Destiny series.
