However, in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6VOpt1tGSDw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">livestream<\/a> with former God of War and Twisted Metal director David Jaffe, Ross revealed that his source for the sales numbers was a now-defunct website called Gamestat, which tracks PlayStation Trophy data, as reported by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/news\/2022\/01\/days-gones-reported-8-million-sales-not-necessarily-accurate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PushSquare<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what Ross said: &#8220;Where I got my data from, I had access\u00a0to a lot of telemetry, and I could see stuff and when we were at 5 million copies \u2013 when we were announced at 5 million copies \u2013\u00a0the telemetry data was at 5.8 [million]. There are basically resells or shared discs. I was actually using an external website \u2013 I think they&#8217;re offline now \u2013 but they were using trophy data and it lined up with our internal telemetry data so for me, it&#8217;s like, &#8216;good enough.'&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ross then said that when leaving Sony, you don&#8217;t necessarily get final numbers for a game&#8217;s sales. Ross also said as a creative director,\u00a0he didn&#8217;t have access to the complete and official Sony numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think [Gamestat] still has the data archived,&#8221; Ross continued. &#8220;Based off the 8 million mark, it matched our telemetry and so I&#8217;m like, &#8216;good enough.&#8217; So maybe it was 7.7 [million]-ish, maybe it was 8.2 [million]-ish, I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the stream, Ross tweeted today that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1479533173147066372?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he stands by the Days Gone sales numbers<\/a> he revealed earlier this week and that in using Gamestat to cross-reference the telemetry he referred to above, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1479537030694637568?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;each set of data verified the other.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During Jaffe&#8217;s stream, Ross\u00a0also said the telemetry he&#8217;s referring to was seen by him before Days Gone was released as a PlayStation Plus title in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s interesting about this is that trophy data does not necessarily translate directly to sales.\u00a0That&#8217;s because players that have purchased used copies of Days Gone or have played it as a PlayStation Plus title (neither of which would be tracked as new sales) can earn trophies.<\/p>\n<p>The players that earned trophies from used copies of Days Gone\u00a0would be lumped into the players that purchased a new copy of Days Gone, thus skewing the total numbers Ross cited as copies sold. So, while Days Gone likely did sell millions, the 8 million copies sold (plus 1 million sold on Steam) is likely not completely accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Ross also clarified that when he said Days Gone was a disappointment to &#8220;local studio management,&#8221; he was referring to upper management within Bend Studio and not necessarily PlayStation or Sony management.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>This update was updated to include direct quotes from Ross. The headline has been changed to reflect Ross&#8217; words more accurately, too.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The original story continues below&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Original Story, 1\/6\/21:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Days Gone has sold at least 9 million copies, according to its director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <em>Game Informer<\/em> reported that Sucker Punch Productions\u2019 2020 samurai game,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/05\/ghost-of-tsushima-is-an-honorable-samurai-blockbuster-over-8-million-copies-sold\">Ghost of Tsushima, has sold more than 8 million copies<\/a> \u2013 quite the feat, especially for a new IP from the developer. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478878095570579456?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to former Days Gone director Jeff Ross<\/a>, the Pacific Northwest zombie title sold even more copies than Ghost of Tsushima but, instead of the warm reception Ghost of Tsushima received for its sales, PlayStation viewed it as a \u201cbig disappointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cAt the time I left Sony [December 2020], Days Gone had been out for a year and a half (and a month), and sold over 8 million copies,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478878095570579456?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ross wrote in a quote tweet of Game Informer\u2019s Ghost of Tsushima story<\/a> about its latest sale milestone. \u201cIt\u2019s gone on to sell more, and then a million+ on Steam. As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenjiSales\/status\/1215342764386390022?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benji-Sales<\/a>, a popular video game sales and business analyst on Twitter, back in January of 2020, Days Gone was the best-selling PS4 exclusive on PSN in 2019 and it also held a spot in the top 10 best-selling digital games for the entire year. Benji-Sales even joked that \u201cSony won\u2019t do PR on the sales success of the game, but I\u2019ll keep pointing it out for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/07\/update-days-gone-sales-numbers-might-be-lower-than-8-million-after-director-reveals\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch embedded media<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in April of 2021, Ross alluded to the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/04\/12\/days-gone-2-details-revealed-by-games-director-including-a-shared-universe-with-co-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Days Gone did not make enough money to greenlight the\u00a0sequel Bend\u00a0pitched to PlayStation<\/a>, and he also shared some details on what Days Gone 2 would have been.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ross has expressed his disappointment in the the lack of further Days Gone development. There\u2019s probably\u00a0something to be said of Ross\u2019 departure from the studio following the release of Days Gone, which he\u2019s now revealed was viewed by local management (likely local Sony and PlayStation management)\u00a0as a \u201cbig disappointment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former Bend director touched further on his initial tweet in the replies section, revealing that he\u2019s \u201cnot sure\u201d if current Bend developers are unhappy with management. In a reply to someone asking if that\u2019s the case, Ross said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478957536543973376?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cin my case, there were years of issues to work through.\u201d<\/a> He also revealed that the lack of official sales discussion from Sony and a possible sequel <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478904870673559555?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cwasn\u2019t ever explained well,\u201d<\/a> citing in a different tweet that despite that, former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2019\/09\/30\/shawn-layden-departs-sony-interactive-entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who left the company in 2019<\/a>, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478908070700978179?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Days Gone and Bend\u2019s \u201cbiggest advocate.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Layden even replied to Ross\u2019 tweet last night, which you can see below:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tw-align-center twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Congratulations \ud83e\udd42\ud83c\udf89 Always thought it was an ambitious and impressive title. Will not forget. \ud83d\udcaa\ud83c\udffd\ud83d\udc99 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kt3EnlhsJb\">pic.twitter.com\/kt3EnlhsJb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 shawn layden (@ShawnLayden) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShawnLayden\/status\/1478896140728692737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 6, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Elsewhere in Ross\u2019 tweet replies, the Days Gone director reveals that developing Days Gone was not an easy task.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopment was a long slog, but we were a small team learning how to make our first open world game,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478885051878285312?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wrote<\/a>. \u201cAll things considered, it\u2019s amazing we finished at all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeRocket\/status\/1478898575518097408?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ross also notes<\/a> that just because Days Gone didn\u2019t review as well as Bend and perhaps Sony and PlayStation might have liked, the potential for a \u201ckick-ass sequel was there.\u201d He noted that the first Killzone got a 70 on Metacritic but that its \u201csequel roared back with a 91.\u201d Bend was planning to raise eyebrows\u00a0with a sequel much in the same way, he said, citing that \u201cyou gotta crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2022\/01\/07\/update-days-gone-sales-numbers-might-be-lower-than-8-million-after-director-reveals\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch embedded media<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ross\u2019 tweets are a fascinating look at how PlayStation views its IP, or rather, perhaps how important critical reception is to a game\u2019s success.
