{"id":424822,"date":"2025-11-05T03:41:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T03:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T03:41:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T03:41:41","slug":"disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Disney, Please Use More Than Just Star Wars And Marvel In Games"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>When you think of Disney today, there\u2019s a good chance either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/star-wars-jedi-fallen-order\/star-wars-jedi-fallen-order-review-a-turbulent-thrill-ride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Star Wars<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy\/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy-review-enthralling-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> comes to mind. That\u2019s not surprising either \u2013 it\u2019s the two properties Disney pumps the most time and money into.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In games, it seems as if Disney exclusively pours resources into them \u2013 yes, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/kingdom-hearts-iii\/a-main-attraction-worth-waiting-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kingdom Hearts<\/a>, which has been great for decades but it seems that series is heading into a decidedly less Disney-based future \u2013 and it\u2019s a shame because the nearly 100-year-old company has so much to offer to the video game space, both to classic fans and new ones alike. That\u2019s why Disney needs to tap into its history.<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games-1.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p>I love a good Star Wars or MCU flick, and I, for the most part, love a game set in a galaxy far far away or in a Marvel-based timeline. But let\u2019s be honest: we almost always know what we\u2019re getting when Lucasfilm or Marvel flashes on screen when we boot up a game. If it\u2019s Star Wars, you\u2019re either getting a Jedi game, a dogfighting game, or a shooter.<\/p>\n<p>On the Marvel side of things, games feel even more indistinguishable. You know that MCU character you love? Well, here\u2019s a game using a different version of that character with a third-person viewpoint and a slant towards action-adventure gameplay. There\u2019s nothing wrong with this, and I\u2019d argue that players as a whole aren&#8217;t quite burnt out on these two Disney universes yet, but surely that day will come.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Disney\u2019s defense, it is attempting to break out of that mold a bit. XCOM developer Firaxis Games is currently making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/midnightsuns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel\u2019s Midnight Suns<\/a>, which is a turn-based, card-based take on the property of the (almost) same name. However, at the end of the day, it\u2019s still a Marvel game, and one day when Marvel oversaturates the gaming market, people might be wary of booting up any game with that red logo on the box, regardless of genre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember when Disney used to make games (kinda) based on its own original movies \u00e0 la <em>The Lion King<\/em>? I can immediately think of some movies recently released by Disney that feel ripe for a game: <em>Raya and the Last Dragon<\/em> \u2013 make it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/preview\/2021\/11\/10\/elden-ring-everything-we-learned-from-playing-it-early\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Souls-like game<\/a> if you\u2019re feeling frisky, Disney, or even something akin to this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/kena-bridge-of-spirits\/kena-bridge-of-spirits-review-one-of-the-best-adventures-of-the-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kena: Bridge of Spirits<\/a>. <em>Moana<\/em> is already set up like a video game in pacing and narrative, with built-in bosses too. Give us her raft and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/assassins_creed_iv_black_flag\/b\/playstation4\/archive\/2013\/10\/28\/assassins-creed-iv-black-flag-review-game-informer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">let us sail around the Pacific Ocean Assassin\u2019s Creed Black Flag-style<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games-2.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p>Make an <em>Alice In Wonderland<\/em> game that allows us, the player, to make choices that fix everything wrong about the Tim Burton live-action remakes. <em>Angels in the Outfield<\/em> \u2013 boom, there\u2019s your sports game. <em>Fantasia<\/em>, obviously a music rhythm game (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/fantasia_music_evolved\/b\/xbox360\/archive\/2014\/10\/20\/harmonix-s-concept-album.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and one that doesn\u2019t use Kinect, please<\/a>). <em>Finding Nemo<\/em> could make a great ocean ecosystem-building game. <em>Frozen<\/em>: A Let It Go karaoke experience writes itself. <em>Bambi<\/em>, clearly that\u2019s a hunti&#8230;you know what, never mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The point is, Disney has a treasure trove of movies and more to lean on when it comes to developing games, and yet, we almost exclusively get Marvel and Star Wars games. The reality is that those two names make money, and they make a lot of it, too. They\u2019re also great for endless sequels, but so are many of Disney\u2019s other franchises. <em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> immediately comes to mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a dearth of pirate games out there, despite pirates being the most \u201cuhhh yeah, pirates + video games = easiest financial slam dunk of all-time.\u201d Sure, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/sea_of_thieves\/b\/xboxone\/archive\/2018\/03\/23\/game-informer-sea-of-thieves-xbox-one-review.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sea of Thieves<\/a>, which I love, but that feels very particular in style and not for everyone. And yes, I know it got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/06\/20\/sea-of-thieves-a-pirates-life-preview-the-day-that-rare-finally-caught-captain-jack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> expansion<\/a>, but that was never going to be as successful as a standalone game based on the IP, nor does it really allow for the sequels that Disney loves so much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/disney-please-use-more-than-just-star-wars-and-marvel-in-games-3.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p>There\u2019s also Ubisoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/07\/20\/ubisofts-skull-bones-is-now-in-alpha-but-the-road-to-get-there-has-reportedly-been\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skull &#038; Bones<\/a>, but that\u2019s stuck in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/11\/01\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">development hell<\/a>, and who knows when that\u2019s coming. Not only does <em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> have a three-movie history to draw on \u2013 oh yes, I definitely am aware there are five movies \u2013 but it also has over 50 years of Disney Parks ride history to use. Want to avoid using movie characters? Easy, make a game with Captain Redd from the classic ride.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hell, make a <em>Halloweentown<\/em> game and tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/01\/13\/hogwarts-legacy-delayed-until-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hogwarts Legacy<\/a> to kick rocks. Okay, so maybe <em>Halloweentown<\/em> isn\u2019t a true <em>Harry Potter<\/em> killer, but you get the idea. What I\u2019m saying is that the foundation for a great Disney game is out there. In fact, there are many great foundations out there, hundreds even. And yet, Disney continues to seemingly build its empire on just Star Wars and Marvel. When you think about it, not developing games based on other properties is really just money left on the table, and oddly enough, that\u2019s not really Disney\u2019s modus operandi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there is the whole \u201cmega-billion dollar company definitely knows its business better than someone writing about how they want a <em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> game\u201d aspect of this all, but even if a game like that doesn\u2019t sell as much as Star Wars or Marvel, it\u2019s not like Disney doesn\u2019t have the cash to burn. Plus, let\u2019s not act like every one of these games is a slam dunk, especially when Marvel\u2019s Avengers, a game that absolutely should have been a slam dunk, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/11\/03\/marvels-avengers-revealed-to-be-a-disappointment-to-square-enix-in-annual-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disappointing overall for Square Enix<\/a>. So what gives?
