{"id":417191,"date":"2025-11-03T16:35:42","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"urn:uuid:4fb53702-c42f-42f3-a516-c588d86d2d1d"},"modified":"2025-11-03T16:35:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:35:42","slug":"radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5\/","title":{"rendered":"Radiohead explain the story behind the creation of its Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, out today on PS5"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Hello.<br \/>So\u2026<br \/>Right&#8230;<br \/>Now then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Things have been happening&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">To mark a period of 21 years since the expulsion of Kid A and Amnesiac from a converted barn in the Oxfordshire countryside into an unsuspecting world we\u2019ve built&#8230; something.<br \/>We aren&#8217;t sure what it is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">To start with, when we first started thinking about it, we intended to build a physical exhibition\/installation in a central London location.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It was going to be a huge red construction made by welding shipping containers together, constructed so that it looked as if a brutalist spacecraft had crash-landed into the classical architecture of the Victoria &#038; Albert Museum in Kensington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This astounding steel carapace would be inserted into the urban fabric of London like an ice pick into Trotsky. Jutting up into the grey English sky. And then &#8211; being constructed from shipping containers &#8211; we could ship it around the world&#8230; New York, Tokyo, Paris&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But then we couldn\u2019t fit it at the Victoria &#038; Albert without parts of the museum building collapsing.<br \/>So we changed location &#8211; now it would look as if it had crashed into the side of the Royal Albert Hall.<br \/>But Westminster council didn\u2019t like the idea one little bit.<br \/>And then Covid delivered the final annihilation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Our dream was dead.<br \/>Until we realised&#8230;<br \/>It would be way better if it didn\u2019t actually exist.<br \/>Because then it didn\u2019t have to conform to any normal rules of an exhibition. Or reality.<br \/>Much better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">So\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With Nigel Godrich we have been working on this for about two years, through lockdowns, self-isolations and many very long intermittent Zoom calls. &nbsp;<br \/>We worked with Sean Evans, a genius video\/computer artist who directed it all with awe inspiring dedication and energy, theatre set designer Christine Jones and the game developers [namethemachine] and Arbitrarily Good Productions.<br \/>And finally persuading Epic Games to help us put it out to the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">We had one guiding principle, visually.<br \/>NO NEW WORK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font\">Because&#8230; there was loads of it already.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5.jpg\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font\">Like really.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u201c\u201d\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font\">Like a really crazy amount&#8230; You\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/radiohead-explain-the-story-behind-the-creation-of-its-kid-a-mnesia-exhibition-out-today-on-ps5-2.jpg\" alt=\"\u201c\u201d\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Everything that we built came directly from what we made 20 years ago, in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And we had all the multitrack recordings from the albums so we were able to rebuild the audio from the original elements in a new controlled space which wasn\u2019t just stereo.<br \/>That was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font\">Working on something as strange as this over long Zoom calls with a large team of technicians all around the world has been one of the strangest experiences we have ever had.<br \/>Unreal in every sense of the word, especially within the months of almost total human isolation.<br \/>In all those days of blankness&#8230;<br \/>A small Minotaur sat on one shoulder saying \u2018This is too mad. This ain\u2019t ever gonna happen\u2019<br \/>And the other shoulder sat another saying &#8216;Oh yes. It is.&#8217;<br \/>What we have made is&#8230; it&#8217;s something like a mutant re-engineering of Kid A and Amnesiac.<br \/>But that\u2019s enough now.
