He also said he\u2019s unsure of how.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>This news comes by way of <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/ea-calls-nft-and-blockchain-games-the-future-of-our-industry\/?utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=socialflow&#038;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>PC Gamer<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, which reported on Wilson\u2019s NFT-related statement during the earnings call. In a bit of a cart before the horse situation, Wilson made the bold claim that NFTs and \u201cplay-to-earn\u201d games, aka blockchain games, are the \u201cfuture of our industry\u201d before adding that \u201cit\u2019s still too early to figure out how that\u2019s going to work.\u201d With that being said, it\u2019s unclear what makes him so sure.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cI think that in the context of games we create and the live services that we offer, collectible digital content is going to play a meaningful part in our future,\u201d Wilson said, according to PC Gamer. \u201cSo, it\u2019s still early to tell, but I think we\u2019re in a really good position, and we should expect us to kind of think\u00a0more innovatively and creatively about that on a go-forward basis.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Oddly enough, considering Wilson\u2019s comments, EA hasn\u2019t revealed any official plans for NFTs or blockchain games. However, that hasn\u2019t stopped other industry giants from doing so. Earlier this week, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/11\/01\/ubisoft-reveals-plans-to-develop-blockchain-games-and-nfts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Ubisoft announced that it plans to develop blockchain games and NFTs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. It also revealed that it plans to employ play-to-earn techniques in-game that allow players to earn digital content from playing Ubisoft games.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Blockchain games and NFTs have drawn heavy criticism in the industry\u00a0thus far due to their part in ongoing environmental damage. The use of cryptocurrencies, which are often used to purchase NFTs, and the mining of said currencies results in millions of carbon dioxide emissions, damaging Earth\u2019s atmosphere, as reported by <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/15\/22328203\/nft-cryptoart-ethereum-blockchain-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>The Verge<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>As a result, some major players have done the opposite of Ubisoft and EA, criticizing and outright banning the use of NFTs and blockchain games. Steam recently said it will not allow developers to publish \u201c<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/partner.steamgames.com\/doc\/gettingstarted\/onboarding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u201d Epic Games CEO <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimSweeneyEpic\/status\/1442519522875949061?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Tim Sweeney similarly criticized NFTs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. However,<span><span>\u00a0one month later, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimSweeneyEpic\/status\/1449146317129895938?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>he revealed that the Epic Games Store is fine working with developers using blockchain technologies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> in response to Steam\u2019s ban.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>At the moment, the use of cryptocurrencies is largely viewed as harmful\u00a0to the planet. Ethereum, one of the most-used cryptocurrencies, though, is working on something it calls \u201cThe Merge,\u201d which it says will \u201c<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/eth2\/merge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>start the era of a more sustainable, eco-friendly Ethereum<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u201d Only time will tell how green Ethereum becomes.
