It seems he\u2019s doing that, but it hasn\u2019t stopped him from speculating on the future of the Smash Bros. series.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>In an issue of Japanese magazine\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><span>Famitsu<\/span><\/span><span><span>, Sakurai said he\u2019s not currently thinking about a sequel to Ultimate, as reported by <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/smash-bros-director-sakurai-says-hes-undecided-if-hell-make-another\/\"><span><span><span>Video Games Chronicle<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cI\u2019m not thinking about a sequel,\u201d Sakurai said to Famitsu. \u201cBut I can\u2019t say that this is definitely the last Smash Bros.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Sakurai famously speculates on the future of Smash Bros. following the release of each new entry in the series, often saying said release could be his last Smash Bros. game. However, it seems he\u2019s keeping the door to a sequel open for now. He also told <em>Famitsu<\/em> that he\u2019s not sure there is a future for Smash Bros. without him.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cI can\u2019t see any way to produce Smash Bros. without me,\u201d Sakurai said. \u201cTo be honest, I\u2019d like to leave it to someone else, and I\u2019ve actually tried that, but it hasn\u2019t worked out. If we continue the series, Nintendo and I need to discuss and seriously consider how to make it a success.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The director touches on something many fans have speculated since Sora\u2019s release: where does the series go from here? How do you top Ultimate, which features over 80 characters, many from franchises not owned by Nintendo? It seems impossible that future installments outdo Ultimate\u2019s roster, but perhaps a more foundational shake-up for Smash Bros. is needed.
