Be it the cost to create them, the staff needed to actually develop a game, or something else behind the scenes, a lot can happen to take it off course. While it\u2019s sad for players, developers know best what their game needs, and time is almost always something developers could use more of. Sometimes, though, time can\u2019t fix everything, and in those cases, games can find themselves stuck in what\u2019s known informally as \u201cdevelopment hell.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>This is a term used to describe games seemingly stuck in development forever. No matter what those development teams do, more and more barriers get in the way, and all of a sudden, a game misses its release date by a couple of months, then a year, then multiple years, and in some unfortunate cases, we just don\u2019t ever hear about the game ever again. Here are five\u00a0games stuck in development hell.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><em>Part 1 of 3 in Game Informer&#8217;s series detailing games that might be stuck in development hell.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item-large-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden gi5-field-image gi5-image field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1-1.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-thumbnail\" \/> <\/div>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-list-item-title field--type-string field--label-hidden gi5-field-list-item-title gi5-string field__item\">Pikmin 4<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<p><span><span>Pikmin is a special franchise to many people, but despite its niche popularity, it\u2019s never reached the heights of other Nintendo franchises. In total, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vgsales.fandom.com\/wiki\/Pikmin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>the franchise has only sold around 8 million copies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. However, Pikmin 3 Deluxe proved the franchise still had some (fruit) juice in it by selling <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.co.jp\/ir\/pdf\/2021\/210201_3e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>roughly 2 million units in less than a year<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> \u2013 a quarter of the series&#8217; entire sales\u00a0 \u2013 and fans have speculated that its financial performance could dictate the future of the series and the development of Pikmin 4.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Pikmin 4 was mentioned by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto back in 2015 when he told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/articles\/2014-07-20-pikmin-4-in-development-and-very-close-to-completion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Eurogamer<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><span><span> that it was in development and \u201cvery close to completion.\u201d Time passed and then Hey! Pikmin, a 2D Pikmin spinoff, was announced and then released in July of 2017, and some speculated that this was the Pikmin 4 Miyamoto was referring to back in 2015.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Now, this is certainly a possibility, especially considering we haven\u2019t heard a peep about Pikmin 4 since 2017, but in June of that year, Miyamoto told <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/articles\/2017-06-14-miyamoto-pikmin-4-still-progressing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Eurogamer<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> that \u201cit is progressing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>If Hey! Pikmin was Pikmin 4, it\u2019d be odd to say Pikmin 4 is still in the works just a month before Hey! Pikmin hit 3DS. If a game is about to come out in a month, developers don\u2019t typically say \u201cit is progressing\u201d when referring to its development in the final month; the game has likely gone gold and is being further optimized and cleaned of bugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>However, that was the last Nintendo or anyone there referred to Pikmin 4, so where it\u2019s at today is anybody\u2019s guess. Here\u2019s hoping Pikmin 3 Deluxe\u2019s 2 million units sold sends a clear message to Nintendo that fans are ready for its sequel. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item-large-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden gi5-field-image gi5-image field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1-2.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-thumbnail\" \/> <\/div>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-list-item-title field--type-string field--label-hidden gi5-field-list-item-title gi5-string field__item\">Skull &#038; Bones<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<p><span><span>Skull &#038; Bones has been in development for years and years and there\u2019s still no sign that it will be releasing anytime soon. It was announced in 2017 as a you-play-as-the-ship-not-the-pirate multiplayer-focused game set in the Indian Ocean during the Golden Age of Piracy. For those familiar with Assassin\u2019s Creed IV: Black Flag, it was basically the ocean-faring portion of that game broken off and spun into its own full release \u2013 or so it seemed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/preview\/2018\/06\/12\/taking-to-the-open-seas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Game Informer <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>went hands-on with Skull &#038; Bones<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> back in 2018, and even at that time, there was no planned release date, although Ubisoft was aiming for a 2019 release. There was a beta planned and players could sign up for it starting in 2018. That beta still hasn\u2019t happened.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>In May of 2019, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2019\/05\/15\/skull-bones-delayed-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Skull &#038; Bones was delayed to at least March 2020<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, just a couple of months after news broke that <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/gamer-culture\/2019\/02\/21\/skull-bones-getting-a-tv-show-ahead-of-games-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Skull &#038; Bones would be getting a TV show<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> to coincide with the game\u2019s release. Things went quiet for over a year and Skull &#038; Bones slipped past its 2020 release date. Then, in September of last year, Ubisoft announced that it had <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/09\/10\/skull-bones-wont-be-shown-at-ubisoft-forward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>no plans to show it during its upcoming Ubisoft Forward showcase<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>At that point, it had been years since anyone last saw Skull &#038; Bones publicly and excitement around the title had almost certainly shifted to wondering: where is this game? In May, Ubisoft announced that <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/05\/11\/skull-bones-gets-a-new-release-window-ubisoft-lineup-schedule-announced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Skull &#038; Bones was scheduled to release sometime between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. And so we arrive at some bittersweet\u00a0news about\u00a0Skull &#038; Bones: <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/07\/20\/ubisofts-skull-bones-is-now-in-alpha-but-the-road-to-get-there-has-reportedly-been\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>it\u2019s finally in Alpha, but getting to this point was apparently extremely difficult<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/first-it-was-an-assassins-creed-expansion-now-its-ubis-1847326742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report from\u00a0<em>Kotaku<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><span><span> revealed that it was originally set to be an expansion to Assassin\u2019s Creed IV: Black Flag before Ubisoft pivoted to it becoming an MMO tie-in for a game called Black Flag Infinite (that never came out, by the way). Then, it was turned into its very own IP. What this full-fledged pirate nautical warfare game turns out to be, only time will tell. However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.akamaized.net\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/667U3sKCZltRVFBUMN0jM8\/c9dbc2fd1ddbf14c9def4cfb5fe90fd2\/Ubisoft_FY22_H1_Earnings_PR_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent\u00a0<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.akamaized.net\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/667U3sKCZltRVFBUMN0jM8\/c9dbc2fd1ddbf14c9def4cfb5fe90fd2\/Ubisoft_FY22_H1_Earnings_PR_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubisoft<\/a><span><a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.akamaized.net\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/667U3sKCZltRVFBUMN0jM8\/c9dbc2fd1ddbf14c9def4cfb5fe90fd2\/Ubisoft_FY22_H1_Earnings_PR_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0financial report<\/a> released last week reveals that the\u00a0<\/span>company<span>\u00a0intends to release Skull &#038; Bones in the &#8220;next fiscal year.&#8221; We&#8217;ve seen it slip\u00a0from release windows before, though, so there&#8217;s no guarantee it&#8217;s a sure fire release for next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item-large-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden gi5-field-image gi5-image field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1-3.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-thumbnail\" \/> <\/div>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-list-item-title field--type-string field--label-hidden gi5-field-list-item-title gi5-string field__item\">Beyond Good and Evil 2<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<p><span><span>Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been stuck in development longer than most games on this list. Ubisoft first revealed a <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-nh6qcfSEg4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>sequel trailer in 2008<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. Yes, you read that right: 2008, the year that happened 13 years ago. Two years after that trailer\u2019s release, Ubisoft told<\/span><\/span><span><span> <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2010\/01\/15\/beyond-good-evil-2-still-in-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>IGN<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> that the sequel was still happening and in development. Then, two years after that, in 2012, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/b\/news\/archive\/2012\/05\/11\/is-this-what-beyond-good-amp-evil-2-looks-like.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>prototype footage believed to be from the sequel surfaced<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Later that year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said Michel Ancel, the game\u2019s director, is simply <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/b\/news\/archive\/2012\/11\/13\/beyond-good-and-evil-2-still-a-thing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>doing too many things at once<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. Ubisoft continued to reiterate the sequel is in development over the years, and then <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/b\/news\/archive\/2017\/06\/12\/beyond-good-and-evil-2-finally-gets-thrilling-wacky-cinematic-trailer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Beyond Good and Evil 2 was revealed, err, re-revealed in 2017<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. Ubisoft said then that it was extremely early in development. <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/beyond_good_and_evil_2\/b\/playstation4\/archive\/2018\/05\/03\/ubisoft-shows-off-gameplay-footage-and-details-timeline.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>We got a look at Beyond Good and Evil 2 some more<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> in 2018 and then a <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2018\/12\/07\/next-beyond-good-and-evil-2-stream-to-showcase-pre-alpha-gameplay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>very-behind-the-scenes look at it again in 2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> during a developer livestream.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>So that\u2019s what, over 10 years of development hell at this point \u2013 no biggie. In 2020, however, Ancel, announced that he was <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/09\/18\/michel-ancel-is-retiring-from-games-but-beyond-good-evil-2-will-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>retiring from games<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. This happened around the same time that he was accused of being \u201ctoxic\u201d at work, creating a \u201cgrotesque\u201d studio, something Ancel denied, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2020-09-28-michel-ancel-denies-link-between-departure-and-ubisoft-abuse-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>GamesIndustry.biz<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><span><span>. Ubisoft was quick to mention that development on Beyond Good and Evil 2 was still happening, though. The last we heard of it was in October of last year when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/10\/30\/beyond-good-and-evil-2-update-from-ubisoft-promises-game-is-progressing-well\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guillemot assured investors that it isn\u2019t stuck in development hell<\/a> (oh yeah, well this list says otherwise, Guillemot!) and \u201cprogressing well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>News of Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been quiet ever since. Is this game coming anytime soon? Probably not, but who\u2019s to say? Certainly not Ubisoft as it\u2019s remained quite mum on the topic. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item-large-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden gi5-field-image gi5-image field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1-4.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-thumbnail\" \/> <\/div>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-list-item-title field--type-string field--label-hidden gi5-field-list-item-title gi5-string field__item\">In the Valley of Gods<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<p><span><span>In the Valley of Gods was announced during <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UOoKPN2KPhg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span>The Game Awards<\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UOoKPN2KPhg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in 2017 as a world premiere<\/a>. Billed as the new game from the creators of <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/firewatch\/b\/playstation4\/archive\/2016\/02\/08\/firewatch-review-gabbin-in-the-woods.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Firewatch<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, In The Valley of Gods\u2019 trailer teased a game where players primarily walk and explore a unique setting \u2013 in this case, the ancient ruins of Egypt. It looked beautiful and, coming from Campo Santo, excitement quickly rose as the three-minute trailer played.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>And then things went a little quiet. No worries, games take time, right? Well, it turns out that in that silence, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/b\/news\/archive\/2018\/04\/21\/firewatch-creator-campo-santo-acquired-by-valve.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>Campo Santo was in talks to be acquired by Valve<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. The company behind Steam, Left 4 Dead, and more did end up buying the developer in 2018, and\u00a0it was revealed in that announcement that In the Valley of Gods was still in development \u2013 it would just now be a Valve game.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>That familiar \u201cis this game in development hell?\u201d silence returned and in December of 2019, Campo Santo co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2019\/12\/03\/campo-santos-in-the-valley-of-gods-is-officially-on-hold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jake Rodkin said In the Valley of Gods\u2019 development was \u201con hold\u201d<\/a> as the studio helped develop and complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/half-life-alyx\/half-life-alyx-review-an-amazing-return-to-city-17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Half-Life: Alyx<\/a>. However, after the release of Alyx, some eagle-eyed fans spotted something seemingly detrimental to the development of In the Valley of Gods: <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/valve\/comments\/g9rb48\/in_the_valley_of_gods_has_been_removed_from\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>it had been removed from Valve\u2019s website<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Now, In the Valley of Gods could still technically be in development, but all signs point to it likely being canceled. Neither Valve nor Campo Santo has officially said it\u2019s canceled\u00a0so on paper, it\u2019s still \u201con hold,\u201d or in other words, stuck in development hell. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item-large-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden gi5-field-image gi5-image field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/video-games-stuck-in-development-hell-part-1-5.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-thumbnail\" \/> <\/div>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-list-item-title field--type-string field--label-hidden gi5-field-list-item-title gi5-string field__item\">Dead Island 2<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<p><span><span>Dead Island 2 was announced way back in 2014 during <em>E3<\/em>. Its <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/dead_island_2\/b\/xboxone\/archive\/2014\/06\/11\/five-important-changes-in-dead-island-2.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span>reveal trailer<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> was awesome, which makes knowing this game is stuck in development hell that much harder to handle. Initially, it was announced that Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager Development was put in charge of the sequel\u2019s production.
