Ultimate roster<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>,<span><span> and it was truly a sight to behold.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>During the announcement presentation, Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that in the survey asking players to list the characters they most want to see in Smash Bros. sent out six years ago, the number one response was Sora, too. That\u2019s part of why <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/opinion\/2021\/10\/06\/soras-inclusion-in-super-smash-bros-ultimate-is-a-perfect-series-sendoff-for-the\"><span><span><span>Sora being the final fighter makes perfect sense<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Sakurai touched on the difficulty in getting Sora into Smash during his reveal. Still, the director\u2019s latest bi-weekly column, Sakurai\u2019s Column 639: The Final One, sheds new light on just how complicated the process was for Nintendo. This comes by way of a column translation from <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pixeljunknews\"><span><span><span>PixelJunk\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> community manager, who goes by <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PushDustIn\"><span><span><span>PushDustIn on Twitter<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, and translator <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KodyNOKOLO\"><span><span><span>KodyNOKOLO on Twitter<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tw-align-center twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">This is the summary of Sakurai&#8217;s Column 639, \u201cThe Final One\u201d. Please make sure to follow both of us for the full details! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GyBRbKOvUf\">pic.twitter.com\/GyBRbKOvUf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PushSusIn (@PushDustIn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PushDustIn\/status\/1450855082203901954?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 20, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span>\u201cEven though he was highly requested, Sakurai thought it\u2019d be highly unlikely to get Sora into Smash,\u201d <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PushDustIn\/status\/1450855097588609024?s=20\"><span><span><span>PushDustIn says in a Twitter thread<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> detailing the translated column. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that the team involved with negotiations for Smash Bros also thought it was impossible as well. But one day an opportunity came through. At a certain award venue, Sakurai had the chance to meet with a Disney representative. They said it would be great if Sora could get in.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Sora\u2019s inclusion seemingly started with this chance encounter, which is reminiscent of the literal elevator pitch that led to the creation of Kingdom Hearts (reportedly, a Square Enix executive and a Disney executive were in an elevator together, and the pitch happened during that ride).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cBut that meeting alone wouldn\u2019t be able to get Sora into Smash Bros.,\u201d PushDustIn said on Twitter. \u201cThe higher-ups could feel differently and talks could fall apart. After long and careful discussions with Square, Nintendo, and Disney, the ok was finally given.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/masahiro-sakurai-details-how-sora-finally-made-it-into-super-smash-bros-ultimate-1.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p><span><span>Sakurai said in the column that Fighter Pass 2 was originally going to have just five fighters, just like the first fighter pass. However, once Sora was given the green light, Sakurai decided to add the sixth spot to Fighter Pass 2. PushDustIn then hands off the translation to <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KodyNOKOLO\/status\/1450858303454580739?s=20\"><span><span><span>KodyNOKOLO<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, who continues and says that Sora\u2019s Ultimate development was supervised by both Disney and Square Enix, which meant there were \u201ca lot of high hurdles to his inclusion and many guidelines to follow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cThe first Sora model that the Smash team sent to Disney\/SE was very quality and there weren\u2019t a lot of issues&#8230;just kidding,\u201d Sakurai writes in the column, according to KodyNOKOLO. \u201cIt was quite difficult.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The Ultimate development team shrunk over the years \u2013 the entirety of Ultimate\u2019s DLC took roughly three years of time \u2013 and then there was the impact COVID-19 had on the DLC\u2019s development. Sakurai said developing the DLC was equivalent to developing a full game. He also said he feels he will only work on a few more games.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/masahiro-sakurai-details-how-sora-finally-made-it-into-super-smash-bros-ultimate-2.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p><span><span>\u201cWith Smash Ultimate, Sakurai felt that he was able to offer a celebration of gaming, and he\u2019s glad he worked on it,\u201d KodyNOKOLO writes on Twitter. \u201cSmash Ultimate isn\u2019t an ordinary game, and he\u2019s happy he was able to collaborate with many developers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>There you have it \u2013 getting Sora into Ultimate was just as challenging as most thought.
