From submitting <a href=\"http:\/\/jasonguisao.com\/commentary\/red-dead-redemption-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my amateur review of the title<\/a> alongside a <em>Game Informer<\/em> internship application\u00a0to attaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/video-feature\/2019\/04\/24\/the-visual-language-of-red-dead-redemption-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the brief video essay that I made<\/a> while attending the internship to get into game design school, Red Dead Redemption II has been tethered to my video-games-industry origin story for as long as I can remember.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>It was only natural that my first bonafide press event as an associate editor would be to attend a Rockstar-hosted Red Dead Redemption II music concert at the Tribeca Festival. I sat front and center, complimentary popcorn in my lap, and re-experienced each solitudinal horseback trek, perilous, slo-mo shootout, and reflective fireside interaction through song. Acclaimed musicians like folk-singer Rhiannon Giddens, producer Daniel Lanois, and neo-soul legend D\u2019Angelo made appearances, as an epic montage of the Van der Linde gang roaming the American wilderness played on a jumbotron behind the stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity align-center\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/this-tribute-concert-to-red-dead-redemption-ii-proved-the-power-of-its-music-1.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/article>\n<p><span><span>Early on, I listened to somber instrumentals that were evocative of brief, poetic memories I had while playing the game rather than outright story beats: fields of bentgrass swaying in the wind, even the rhythmic click-clack of horse hoofs pressing against Saint Denis\u2019 cobblestone pathways. But at the midpoint, I recall the intense summer sun dipping into New York Harbor and chilly breezes swooping in as the troupe began to croon \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ME7x7_blf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mountain Hymn<\/a>,\u201d a quiet piece that echoes the transience of life and innocence in Red Dead Redemption II\u2019s violent American frontier.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Suddenly, Lanois and Giddens, backed by harmonious chants, begin to croon \u201cSee the fire in your eyes\u201d repeatedly, and the intermittent audience noise falls away. That rapturous moment when Arthur Morgan watches the sun rise \u2013 its harsh, red rays dappling the treeline \u2013 becomes ever so clear and momentous. I was always in awe of the Red Dead Redemption II soundtrack and how it\u2019s reminiscent of and inspired by a number of classic spaghetti western scores composed by the great, late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PYI09PMNazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ennio Morricone<\/a>. Hearing it live, however, was electric.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/06\/23\/this-tribute-concert-to-red-dead-redemption-ii-proved-the-power-of-its-music\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch embedded media<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span><span>When D\u2019Angelo emerged from blue-lit smoke to sing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L0AykH20X3Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unshaken<\/a>,\u201d everyone in Battery Park was completely enraptured (you can watch a portion of the song from the festival in the video above). A funky guitar solo echoes throughout the venue, as the singer\u2019s smooth voice gives way to musical vespers: \u201c<\/span><\/span><span><span>May I stand unshaken. Amid, amidst a crashing world.\u201d While listening, I couldn\u2019t help but come to grips with why \u201cUnshaken\u201d remains Red Dead Redemption II\u2019s most popular song. Despite acknowledging the incredible voices that lent themselves to Woody Jackson\u2019s eclectic score, I\u2019ve always preferred the lyricless couplet that is \u201cAmerican Venom\u201d and \u201cAmerican Reprise\u201d <\/span><\/span><span><span>\u2013<\/span><\/span><span><span> fans might recognize these two incredible songs from the game\u2019s final story mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cUnshaken,\u201d however, chronicles Red Dead Redemption II\u2019s most resounding themes in mere minutes: redemption through violence, redemption through heroism, and, most importantly, redemption through fatherhood: \u201c<\/span><\/span><span><span>Am I to wander, as a wayward son?
