Lead game designer Tymon Smektala opened up about Dying Light 2 a little more, including the struggles of development woes in recent years and more on the sequel size.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/where-is-dying-light-2-is-it-cancelled-techland-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a detailed report surfaced<\/a> showcasing several reasons why it feels like Dying Light 2 development progress was all over the place: because it was. The report detailed a hostile work environment that was plagued with mistrust, bouncing leadership, and nepotism. This, of course, on top of the normal troubles that development usually faces in addition\u00a0to a global pandemic with work-from-home orders.\u00a0&#8220;I think it&#8217;s safe to say that all of us hoped we&#8217;d have fewer hurdles to overcome,&#8221; Smekta\u0142a told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/after-a-year-of-silence-techland-is-ready-to-talk-about-dying-light-2-again\/?fbclid=IwAR2Lo3RSkbcffepRhvPkZOzRIJbLMNlPq2QOND9nT8D5E5Lg4cYJXtLgrs0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>GamesRadar\u00a0<\/em><\/a>in a recent interview.\u00a0&#8220;but even though we faced some problems with the scope and ambition of the project, we didn&#8217;t lose a day and kept pushing the game forward with each production milestone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had to find an effective structure for the game, the right balance between gameplay and narrative, we had to deal with some pressure, but I think it made us wiser and more experienced as a team. The game also benefited a lot from that process, so thankfully, we&#8217;re now almost ready to start presenting it in a broader manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/04\/08\/techland-confirms-dying-light-2-map-size-talks-about-recent-hurdles\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch embedded media<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Smektala confirmed that development has absolutely been going slowly, but it is still currently happening. There has been a lot of concern that Dying Light 2 has fallen into development hell, much like that of the upcoming Dead Island 2. He promises that this isn&#8217;t the case, though the delay that moved it from its initial 2020 Spring launched helped buy the studio time to integrate the unique narrative system more effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The director told the site that the entire team was &#8220;surprised by the complexity of the beast&#8221; that they have created, which is no surprise when looking at the massive scope of player choice in-game. There is one key choice halfway through the game, especially, that completely changes the entire Dying Light 2 world. These aren&#8217;t any minuscule variables; these are tricky mechanics that Techland is working with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also took us some time to finalize the design for City Alignment, a gameplay mechanic that allows you to shape the playable elements that appear in the game,&#8221; he added.\u00a0&#8220;At the early stages of the project, the mechanic was really complex, but then we realized we&#8217;re not making a strategy game \u2013 and what we had was slowing the player&#8217;s progress a lot. In the end, the hard part was finding out how much of it we want to keep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview with\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/wccftech.com\/the-big-dying-light-2-qa-techland-opens-up-on-c-engine-tech-delays-game-length-much-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WCCFTech<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>senior technology programmer Lukasz Burka also confirmed that the map of Dying Light 2 is four times its predecessor&#8217;s size.\u00a0\u201cThe estimate that the map in Dying Light 2 is four times bigger than that of the original game is the most precise estimate that we can provide. The map of Dying Light 2 is much more vertical and gives many more exploration opportunities, so the city feels even bigger than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t have a release date at this time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/10\/30\/where-is-dying-light-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other than a vague 2021\u00a0window<\/a>, but it is nice to see Techland coming back to life publicly so that fans can be assuaged of any cancellation concerns.
