Beyond generative models gobbling up my own and my fellow creatives&#8217; work in a bid to produce abysmally average output, AI data centres are also devouring all of the available memory. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/memory\/ram-and-storage-is-ridiculously-expensive-right-now-because-of-drumroll-ai-of-course-and-theres-little-reason-to-think-prices-will-drop-any-time-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">This drives up prices and makes DRAM supply for us PC gamers pretty scarce<\/a>. CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman argues this is truly for the best.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iMsUcCYNKqY?si=gYx2yshJ-Epnn5Z1&amp;t=1747\" target=\"_blank\">a recent episode of the Cheeky Pint podcast<\/a>, Altman argued, &#8220;From a global allocation perspective, actually it\u2019s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world\u2019s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer, and be used 5% of the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that is steam escaping from my ears. But before I go full screaming tea kettle, let&#8217;s take a beat. Altman is talking less about PC gamers specifically here, and more about solo AI bros craving compute power and &#8220;local inference&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-OKyGme\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/OKyGme.js\" async=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s bemoaning an inefficiency within the AI industry rather than taking aim at us pesky gamers. He goes on to add, &#8220;You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you&#8217;re trying to deal with this very supply constrained environment. And somehow everyone&#8217;s&#8230; Many people&#8217;s intuition is the opposite of that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It still feels a bit rich for Altman to complain about the memory scarcity OpenAI and ChatGPT helped create. I could also keyboard warrior my way through several paragraphs about how resource hungry the data centres he&#8217;s arguing should enjoy DRAM priority are, not to mention how the rapid AI infrastructure build out has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/a-wild-testament-to-the-obscene-bloat-and-waste-of-genai-googles-electricity-consumption-is-exponentially-increasing\/\" target=\"_blank\">caused many of big tech&#8217;s greener energy goals to fall by the wayside<\/a>\u2014but I&#8217;ll spare you. For one thing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/we-feel-very-good-about-our-trajectory-here-says-google-as-its-stock-tanks-by-usd500-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s AI features appear to be cannibalising ad revenue from search<\/a>.
