Less than two weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/runescape-is-getting-a-new-character-type-that-promises-a-fresh-start-but-existing-players-are-wary-of-splitting-the-community-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">announcing RuneScape Reignited<\/a>\u2014essentially a new type of character on separate, unique servers, intended as a way for new and lapsed players to restart their adventures from fresh\u2014the studio has decided to cancel it.<\/p>\n<p>There was trouble with RuneScape Reignited almost right from the start, with complaints ranging from a potential community split to restrictions on character interactions and the need to pay for a separate subscription. Just a few days after the initial announcement, Jagex <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.runescape.com\/m=news\/reignited-where-we-go-from-here\" target=\"_blank\">apologized<\/a> for making veteran players feel like they were being shunted aside, and said it was &#8220;exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>A few days after that, it laid out a more specific list of <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.runescape.com\/m=news\/reignited-end-of-week-update\" target=\"_blank\">intended alterations<\/a>, and invited more feedback from players, &#8220;so we can follow up next week with more of our thoughts.&#8221; With that feedback now received, it seems that Jagex has heard enough. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,&#8221; Mod Ryan\u2014associate creative director Ryan Philpott\u2014said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.runescape.com\/m=news\/reignited-an-update-from-mod-ryan\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a> announcing the cancellation. &#8220;Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"high\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/l5bWocJHxd0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very sudden about-face, but not unprecedented. In 2023, for instance, Jagex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/runescape-fans-chalk-up-a-small-victory-for-the-players-as-developer-chucks-new-and-hated-battle-pass-in-the-trash\/\" target=\"_blank\">dropped a new RuneScape battle pass<\/a> in the wake of massive player backlash; in 2025, the studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/runescape-fans-have-spoken-treasure-hunter-microtransactions-will-be-scrapped-in-january-as-part-of-a-wider-transformation-across-jagex\/\" target=\"_blank\">scrapped &#8220;Treasure Hunter&#8221; microtransactions<\/a>, in what Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy said was &#8220;part of a wider transformation across Jagex, which is seeing a renewed commitment to delivering deeper value, greater fairness and long-term improvements for players.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It hasn&#8217;t been entirely smooth sailing: Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/runescapes-monthly-membership-now-costs-as-much-as-a-world-of-warcraft-subscription-as-jagex-announces-its-second-price-hike-in-less-than-2-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">price hikes<\/a> have not gone over well (no surprise there, though), and Jagex&#8217;s cowardly decision to scrap in-game Pride Month events was allowed to stand despite players absolutely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/no-gay-no-pay-the-runescape-community-is-absolutely-mauling-jagexs-new-ceo-over-his-decision-to-cancel-new-pride-month-events\/\" target=\"_blank\">mauling the studio<\/a> for it. But in terms of gameplay, at least, Jagex has demonstrated a willingness to react with relative haste when it&#8217;s blown things sufficiently badly\u2014and this definitely qualifies. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the cancellation, Philpott invited new and returning players to jump into the game with a 10 day free trial beginning on December 2, which will offer full access to all worlds and content.
