As such, he&#8217;s been described as the &#8216;AI godfather&#8217;. But, perhaps surprisingly, he recently described AI as &#8220;alien beings&#8221; that humans have a &#8220;moral obligation&#8221; towards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re creating alien beings\u2014meaning we\u2019re not the only intelligent beings around,&#8221; He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/oct\/13\/geoffrey-hinton-trump-ai-tech\" target=\"_blank\">in a recent interview with The Guardian<\/a>, &#8220;And the reality is, we only have a couple of years to adapt to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hinton claims, &#8220;AI models understand what they\u2019re saying. You couldn\u2019t possibly answer all the questions without understanding the question. It\u2019s ridiculous to say they don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-eGbQVX\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/eGbQVX.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Now, far be it for me to argue with an expert in the field, but I feel like &#8216;understanding&#8217; is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. For just one thing, I&#8217;m not sure an &#8216;answer&#8217; consisting of what is statistically most likely to follow a prompted question is really &#8216;understanding.&#8217; In other words, I don&#8217;t have a Nobel Prize laureate like Hinton does, but I am at least familiar with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_room\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese Room thought experiment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hinton also says, &#8220;The reality is, we\u2019re making beings of a different kind. And the big tech companies keep saying: we want it smarter. This is crazy. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/openai-admits-several-of-its-ai-models-breached-testing-and-hacked-into-a-startups-network-by-themselves-calling-it-an-unprecedented-cyber-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\">the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident<\/a> is not yet a small dot in the rearview mirror, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/your-washing-machine-is-subject-to-more-safety-rules-than-ai-says-microsoft-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">the president of Microsoft claims that a carton of milk is more regulated than AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hinton cut his ties to Google in 2023 in order to &#8220;freely speak out about the risks of AI,&#8221; and he&#8217;s sceptical about the AI industry&#8217;s attempts to self-regulate. He quips, &#8220;Do we think tobacco companies should have been allowed to design the warnings on the packets? So that they could print them in a six-point font, in dark grey on black?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even so, Hinton also expresses concerns about the path to AI regulation, saying that humans bear a moral obligation towards AI models.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once you start talking about, \u2018We have a moral obligation towards these alien beings,\u2019 you lose your audience. I\u2019ve struggled with this issue,&#8221; Hinton says, &#8220;We care about people. [But] we\u2019re making these things and there\u2019s nothing to stop us giving these things\u2014which are more intelligent than us\u2014less rights than us. I\u2019m willing to be selfish and choose human beings. Most people don\u2019t understand what consciousness is. They don\u2019t understand what subjective experience is, and they\u2019re very confident that even though they don\u2019t understand it, they\u2019re sure AI doesn\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m not a doctor of Philosophy myself, I do know someone who is\u2014our very own Jacob Fox. And when we interpret personhood as to do with objective characteristics such as rationality, behaviour, and so on, rather than experience, we run the risk of ascribing moral and legal and political weight to them.
